New here. S/E Coast Oz..
Just needing some pointers.

First up, this morning I got notification that my beans have finally arrived in Melb after sitting in the UK waiting for a flight for the past 4 weeks. Co-incidence, an ol mate owed me and sent me somethings in the mail from Melb last week, all I can say is F**kin* lucky. I just hope the beans from Attitude arrive. Tho' I do have a back up. It is shit buying seends in Aust. But the waiting time has given me the chance to get set up.

All set for a top feed DWC. This is how I grew some 20+ years ago and I liked it. Not much of a smoker of late, though I was.. like cones on the way to work at 6:30am was.. Just went off it, but I love gardening and looking for a new hobby, interest apart from my work.

So, as I was saying - What do you think my problems are going to be?
I have Ph Meter, PPM meter, Ph up/down etc.
Nutrients from Canna
MarsHydro TSW2000
MarsHydro Tent 1mx1mx1.8m.
150cm (6") Carbon Filter and extraction fan, nothing flash.. Vivosun.
One oscillating fan so far.
Like everyone was saying, we've had some rain down here, so things were a little muddy down under the house when I started to set up. Had to install a pump under my Resevoir in case of another flood.
Temps are constant around 20C. We are coming into winter, and also having aquariums (tropical) I have a couple of water heaters to spare if needed.
Humidity will most probably have to be addressed, if not this grow, definitely in the future as I hone my skills.
First grow will be 2 plants - Amnesia Haze, and one of the other "freebies" they (Attitude) send.
Today I did a trial run, set up the Air stones, one in each pot, 2 in Res. Pots hold water up to about 1cm below the Trays, and obviously I have not put the grow wool in yet. I'm still reading, though think I have a handle on the inital stage, not too wet, half nukes.
Any comments, help, tips would be appreciated.

Maybe look into a drench of spinosad, it's a pesticide derived from bacteria, available from bunnings pretty cheaply it is also suppose to be a potent larvicide.
Thanks mate i will have a search. There's another local one i heard about also under the chemical name DiPel based on Bacillus thuringiensis, it's available as Yates Nature’s Way Caterpillar Killer at Bunnings. But it uses a different species of BT that's not as good on gnats, and the Bacillus thuringi-ensis subspecies israelensis in mosquito dunks is the good one. I was able to source 2kg cheaply in the USA, and it's worked for people when nothing else did so hopefully it works for me too. I'll post back when i give it a try.

Morning lads, so I was chatting to a mate in the states that breeds a few strains. Fresno fella, bloody good fella. Told him about the rot at my mates joint on one of his strains.
For all you suffering bud rot fellas this product he swears by. Follow the link and download the MSDS chart. Most of the ingredients are readily available here. Supermarkets Bunnings etc. You get the drift. I'm going to be mixing a batch and hopefully it stops the rot pun intended.

Anybody in here growing hydro with dry powder nutes? Looking for something decent that we can get in Oz lo
Get the following 2 products from your nearest ag supply store:

https://www.campbellsfert.com.au/product/product-type/diamond-range/diamond-special-t/ (This is your base, they may not have this brand but they will have something similar. The one my local supplier had is called Hydroflex T. You basically want their hydro Tomato premix)

https://www.yara.com.au/crop-nutrition/fertiliser-products/yaraliva/yaraliva-tropicote/ (This is your calcium nitrate)

Then get this from Woolies or Coles:

https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/746176/help-hand-epsom-salt (This is your magnesium sulphate)

This is for 100L resevoir:

Mix 60g of Special T and 20g of Epsom Salts (This is your part A. Mix this into the rez until it has dissolved full)
40g Calcium Nitrate (This is Part B. Mix this into your res once Part A is full dissolved and stir until dissolved)

This is a good starting point. You can adjust the quantities depending on how heavy your plants feed but keep the ratios the same.

Cheers

Keeping the rez pathogen free will be a problem unless you have a solution for that in place. Calcium hypochlorite or H2O2 added regularly will help.

I take it this is for veg. growth? Do you make any changes during flower? I'm going to assume you also start adding extra MKP to the mix at about 5-6 weeks in?

I haven't really noticed any difference when adding PK boost or not. In a perfectly controlled environment would be where you might start to see some differences probably.

If only I'd found this a month ago, maybe I wouldn't be having so many problems which are now too far advanced.

The problem with MSDS's is that they're always vague with %ages & precise chemicals, so making your own is always going to be a bit hit & miss. For instance, it says "Potassium salts", but doesn't actually specify which salt is used.

Does it stop the rot? Looks good for insects. Whatever stops the rot has to be good I like the fact with the IPA it evaps away after doing its job
Don't think so. Not sure. BT stops rot to. (Edit: i thought BT did but looks like it doesnt).

I have Lost Coast, Azamax, OGS and Dr Bannons soap. I use the OGS the most.
Is it the alcohol in Lost coast that kills the rot?

The couple times ive seen the owner of Lost Coast on Grand master level he has always come across well.

Accent hydroponics. I buy a 5kg bucket and that makes 11 litres of A and 11 litres of B. I use a drain to waste system and run off about 10% each time to flush the medium and ensure that nothing gets to a toxic level.

So there are a few different products around targeting different insects with bacillus based strains. Unfortunetly they are using specifici species and sub species of these bacteria.

The one we are after for fungas gnat larvae is bacillus thuriginensis subsp. israeliensis whereas the one in dipel is a differenct species sub species.

bt israeliensis is available commercially in Australia as a product called Vectobac, but it is expensive and only comes in 10L

Long time reader first time poster on the Aussie thread, I’m on the Qld south coast.
Coco is real magnet for fungus gnats, I’ve had success controlling them with perlite, nice layer at top and bottom of pots, finer seems to work better. It’s doesn’t rid them completely if infestations are bad, but are few gnats are pretty harmless.
The Yates BT works good for caterpillar, but needs constant applications.

personally I’d grab the magnesium sulfate from the ag store as well and probably some mkp and maybe some map as well so you can up the p ratios in flower

Definitely could. Those 25kg bags last a looooong time though so nice to be able to get at least 1 component in smaller quantities. Id buy everything in 1kg bags if I could. Sure you can add more to the recipe, some microbes if in medium, but was trying to give the simplest option that will work as good as any overpriced A&B from the hydro store.

I wouldn't really know how to mix those in at the right ratios. All I know is it's the same shit that's in the bottles, they whack a sticker on and Jack the price through the roof. @klx 's recipe is a great starting point for me, I just need something that will work.

You are a legend bro. That is exactly what I'm looking for. After a year growing I've realised that it's lady Canna who does all the magic not their over priced bottle feeds.

i just had a look on redox’s website. The hydroflex F doesn’t look too bad on its ratios. Almost 1:2 on the n:k (which I like for the base).

also the S doesn’t look too bad either with the added Mg

yeah it’s a good starting place.
Grab hydro buddy and look into it a bit. Once you’ve got the basic recipe you can use hydro buddy to tune it to your needs.
