from what i've heard and seen, avocado seeds, if submersed in an inch or so in water, drops its taproot and sprouts.. and you can watch the development of this happening in crystal clear water. i cant seem to make it work for me :-(

I've started one with 3 toothpicks in the side just enough to hold it up and it took around 1 month maybe up to 2 months to sprout.

one thing to try which works with soil is peel the brown skin off and take a thin slice of both ends. ive read that the odds are 1out of 4 sprout on average.

pfft, you're probably just not getting nice viable pits - the bigger the pit the better. I just started like a dozen pits. I put them in these tupperwear containers in about a half inch of water then put them in the south window. Within a day the water is gone and I have to refill and in two days the bottom cracks open and I have roots. Some of the avocados that are falling from my tree have roots sprouting from the pits!!! Talk about ripe! I've started cutting them open very carefully since I chopped a bit of root off one time.
I'm going to graft my Choquette onto the rootstocks so I don't have to wait 8 years. I'll probably be doing that in like 6 months.
I hope you plan on grafting too.
Good luck.

So, I came to know about a behind the scene paper on avacado seeds that some of the
preworkout supplements are made up with it. But, unluckily I lost the link. Do you know about it?

you could scarify the seeds ... just lightly score the outside layer with an xacto knife (then maybe into a fungicide).

you want easy avocado germination? soak the seed in 125 degree water for half an hour, then cut a half inch off of pointed side, dip it in fungicide, and plant it so that its almost flat with the soil, but the seed sticks out maybe a quarter inch. if u got good media and a temperate atmosphere, itll take about a month to sprout.

Ground avocado pits and leaves have been a traditional central/south american medicine - abortive - terminated babies.
I forget where I read that but I know it contains some form of cyanide - the good kind. Kind of like the cancer stomping power of the loquat extracts made from the ground seeds.
I forget the details.

Ok, so the first pit is a mediocre one. Notice the circular shape and puny size - but it still shot out some roots and cracked open!
The next one is a much nicer pit - you can tell by the perfect egg shape and massive size. They are both about a week old(notice how many more roots the big pit has! actually, the big pit is a few days younger.) and I'll be putting them in pots as soon as I get around to it. There is the tiny little shoot coming out of the mediocre pit - it looks like an asparagus head but I couldn't get a pic of it since it is way down in that crack.

Just over one month old: Maybe 6 weeks, I'm not sure anymore.

I'm pissed.
I planted those two pits in pots yesterday and I go out this morning to find they had been dug up and gnawed on by squirrely squirrels. They were lying out of the pots about a foot or two away. I replanted them straight away - some of the roots were damaged.
I hope they make it.
Well, if I run out of guacamole, I can make some squirrelymole.

Maybe in his old age, he needs to chew on yo' mommas.

But yeah, I feel you. Well, not really 'cause I don't have a dog or a cat - although my place gets frequented by nearby cats. Some people have pets, I have plants. Maybe one day...
