Bloody Kangaroos!! Ideas??

yes i still have a piss at my plots and i take my dog and hope he to has a piss but in the bottles makes sure you dont have a period of weak scent.
 
Yeah, I believe the urine will soak into the surrounding area and put off a stronger scent... But I hear you on leaving some in open jars to keep the smell up. :leaf:

You think if dogs had thumbs they'd put bottles of pee around instead of pissing on trees? bongsmilie
 
jars of urine would work best... the urine gets hot, and gets really stinky as opposed to being absorbed by the earth and drying out.

thats why dogs have to constantly remark there territory the smell dissipates and is washed away with the rain.
so yes if dogs had thumbs i think they would piss in jars and save themselves some trouble...:-)
 
I think you might just have to pull the Mick Dundee and wait out there for em. Give them the bull horns to put them to sleep. I would think a Hot pepper spray or some thing that might deter them from wanting the plant again (HABANEROS)
 
haha gosh you all have such great ideas/...
ill wait for the kangas and give them some southpark treatment for sure =P

but yeah piss in the jars sounds more probable
i piss around them anyways and the kangas still came after the rains :)
ill let you guys know how it goes :)
 
hey dopedogg, yeah i'm outdoors, but my bloody seeds haven't sprouted yet, got some seedlings coming but not here yet so i'm still waiting :(

(they are eating the leaves... leaving the stem to grow back haha)
I have my 40 or so seedlings ready to go out, but the ones out there being eaten are freaking me out a bit

I know lots of you wont live in australia, but deer, rabbits, native indians... whatever it is im sure you all have to sometimes address a similar problem...

1 - strap the pots round tree trunks too high for the kangaroos to feast on
2 - obviously build a fence, but thats gonna cost a bit and look a bit sus, we want to spread out our plants a fair bit so that would be TONS of fences
3 - Small cage like fences just around the pots, but once they get big its gonna be a bit hard to do...
4 - Catch the kangaroos and blow them up to scare off the rest... but i dont think this one will work haha

But yeah, they all have pros but lots of cons of each of these ways
i thought about just putting platforms in the trees and sitting them up there.. but yeah dont wanna get caught
does anyone have any good methods they often use to get past this type of problem?

Dunno if its already been said as i don't have time to read all the pages but companion planting is the best way.
Plant the animals favourite foods in and around you area.
Chuck down lettuce seeds,cucumbers etc.. near where your growing and they will go for that instead of your pot.
Very cheap and easy,choose plants that grow all by themselves and require no looking after.
This will also help to protect your weed as bugs will tend to go for plants that we also like to eat.
Also try laying pepper around the base of your plants stems as most animals will first sniff at the base of a plant before they begin to eat it,when they get some pepper in their nose they usually bugger off:joint:
 
Get 50 pound fishing line and wrap it around the trees a lot of times so that it makes an invisable "cage" around your plants(it might confuse or catch them). it can stop a person from walking threw it also
 
just like anything in the woods(fence,wood board,your pots,garbage) only you cant see it untill its to late. but I dont think people are the problem..................
 
What about garlic...It's a natural deterrent to many animal species. I'm not certain about kangaroos but....worth a try none the less. You can buy garlic dispensers or plant garlic around your crop.

When I stayed in the countryside for a year in N.QLD we grew a few around the farmland from different seeds we'd accumulated. One female (was told the weed it came from was Durban Poison) got to the height of the guttering of a Queenslander style lifted house (about 15ft) house, we topped it at 6ft, its trunk was like a tree and we got a sports bag full Schapelle Corby would have been proud of.

So nervous driving down to the coast with that stinking out the car, I dont think I passed 80Kph on the dot.

hi ,,I'm form Australia too,,and I have had the same experiences a few years ago....we built "plant guards" around small groups 2/3 plants,,,using dead branches and such from around the area..you can make them look natural enough to avoid easy detection,,,,and if you make them wide enough them the roo's wont be able to reach it,,and if you make it high enough 1mx1m should be enough then you need nothing on the top (we used to put a couple of branches over the top to hide it a bit more.. good luck with that :weed:

thanks so much, im gonna use a few of them. most of them i reckon haha
then surely i will be fine with the kanga problem

but for people who are having problems with similar pests or other large animals im sure they will find at least one of the great ideas in this thread will work for them

so thanks again for everyones input
this is a very good area now for dealing with these kind of problems
ill let you all know how it goes :) feeling confident
