BS240 VS HSS a non scientific comparison

I know HSS advertises their lights as having 6w and 3w diodes but I think they may actually be 10w running at 6w and probably 5w running at 3w. The only pic I've seen showing how much they actually draw is from SettingSun's grow on 420Mag from a while back. He used a PPF800 and got a draw of 189w.
if that's the case I can't see the 400 being less than 90W!

They are cheap, ~$20. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=202196386&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_sku=202196386&ci_kw={keyword}&cm_mmc=shopping-_-googleads-_-pla-_-202196386&ci_gpa=pla&locStoreNum=6609
can you enter this link again? it doesnt work. I didnt know the name of the tool and the one I had found was 200$! 20$ I will look into it,. thanks!

I am gonna look into getting that tool that tells you current power draw if it's not that expensive. Its the only way to know.

EDIT: too expensive
Haha that seems like a much simpler way of checking than what I was gonna do.

little update, I got up too late to get pictures with the lights off, and my memory card was full after 5 pics. It gives you an idea of the growth during the past few days. I would like to mention, I have not watered the plants in the blue container yet and they have been in there for about 2 weeks hehe... thinking of doing that today. This cabinet is really low maintenance. The Grapefruit is coming along nicely, I cannot wait to see the results on that one, it will be very interesting to see how it goes because the mother is lovely under HIDs!!

EDIT good news bad news: the biggest tree in the middle of the cabinet, (blue bin number 1) seems to be growing balls. The conKusion in with the grapefruit is a girl as well as the Chemo in blue bin #2. The Chemo is going to be my baby, I had a few bags of Chemo earlier this year and it was such good smoke. I might keep the male alive in the dresser and see about making some conKusheMo!!! hehe, the 2 plants in bin #3 have no signs of sex yet. the show is about to start :leaf:

It is kind of nice that infrequent watering decreases the maintenance needed with LEDs, but I'm curious about if it may be too infrequent? For instance, would it be better to do a hempy style grow under LEDs to keep watering once or twice a week? That way the plants can better take in nutes, develop a healthy root system, and promote healthier growth by increasing the frequency of new water being introduced. The wet/dry cycles in soil under LED are so far between that it may actually be detrimental to development, especially during flowering where nutrient needs change and the plant may need more than what is available in the soil before the soil has dried out enough to warrant watering.

I believe its not an issue because I am in supersoil, plants are doing well at the moment.
That's good to hear man. I had an issue with it the first time and had to double the amount of perlite I use this round. Have you noticed any differences so far in stretching between the two lights?

the only plant we could use to compare the stretching is the conKusion that is in the big pot with the grapefruit and the SLH under the blackstar... its a bit further from the light but it's as short as the others.

the conKushion in the laundry basket looks like it was thirsty... otherwise everything is looking good. The conkushion in the middle might actually be a female, need a few more days to be sure, there are a few hair but it looks like it might be growing some balls as well.

I move the portable fan to the top of the cabinet because my other small fan died and I wanted some air flow at the bottom of the unit. Anyway, the setup is not optimal, but its good. I am trying not to spend any more money for this grow. I killed the conKushion that was in with the Chemo... it looks like 4 out of 5 seeds were female so thats good. not 100% sure yet. The Grapefruit is doing very well, so far I like the BS240 2012, looking forward to see if the buds are gonna keep growing until they reach a decent size. Next update I will make an effort to get the pics with the lights LEDs off. cheers. :leaf:

When a plant is hermaphrodites, does it grow balls and hairs at the same time or it will grow flower first..>?

no I have no idea, .. I just went with what I was thinking and what gastanker said. I have the RV2, I thought it was about 60W but you might be right, hopefully you are! I doubt it though because the rv1 has 15x6W LED ... usually they don't drive em full blast and the RV2 has a few 3W diodes but both light are very similar. I will try to find the answer to that question...

Just the couple white/blue LED's without counting the red LED's are more than 45 watts. The 180w HHS pulls 189 actual watts. I'm 99% sure the RV2 pulls 90 watts or more.

yes I am pretty sure as well,so I decided there was no point buying the Kill A Watt meter just to confirm something I already know! I mean I sent them an email, they know their shit.

Seeing that you own one of these HSS panels. What the led panel cooling method??? No fans?? Is there a heatsink(they seem to light and thin to have an aluminum heatsink)??? I posted this question in another thread and got no answer. Just wondering.

Nice grow BTW....be safe.

no cooling system at all, they use heavy duty diodes, rated as high as the one you may have on your car. On the top of the light, there is a few hot spots almost hard to keep my hand on but the light doest seem to generate much heat overall... its very light weight.

a peak at the FERO dresser...got some younger seedlings here 12/12 from seed... the TD clone was under 12/12 before rooting, I dont think this plant will ever amount to much, but it's pretty cool looking

everything is going well in the cabinet, chemos and conkushions are starting to flower, enjoy!

Looking good Endur0xX!! Looks like the Blackstar 240w is outperforming the HSS PPF-400Rv2 pretty significantly... would you concur? I have always been interested in those HSS panels because of the larger watt LED diodes and the passive cooling design (sweet sweet silence! and less power draw!), very edgy stuff! But they gotta grow some buds right? Thanks again for sharing...

no, the grapefruit and the SLH are much older, the 2 conkushions are getting lights from both lights,(the one in the laundry basket and the one in the blue bin to the left...), the plants in the blue bin #2-3 are 2 chemos and 1 baby conkushion, we lost the other conkushion that was doing really well under the HSS because it was a male... so yeah, both lights are doing well at the moment... I am only hoping that the buds under the blackstar will keep growing at this rate because I am liking what I see! oh also the party cup was under the HSS for a long time and was doing really well, its in the left corner now, you can see it well on pictures 01-03-2012-9 .
