Buckets instead of pots

my first grow i used 40 lbs (5 gallon) cat litter buckets that had been cleaned out with a mild bleach solution. i drilled about 8 3/8" holes in the bottom and laid about 1" of gravel (cleaned in the mild bleach solution) in the bottom. Worked great! Tons of room for roots; great water retention without root rot.

I don't get it... why??? Why buckets and soil???

I mean, are planters REALLY that expensive? I got my 3 gallon SmartPots for about $4 each. Are you saving yourself time and money trying to make a painter's bucket into a housing for your grow?

In addition to decreased aeration of the media they can also keep the media hot. Imagine being buried in dirt inside of a bucket in an 80 degree room. It'd get hot in there...

Stop Plant Abuse. Stop putting soil in buckets. Planters are not expensive and are, *gasp*, made for plants.

Any plastic bucket will work if holes are drilled in the bottom. A good place to get plastic buckets is in the bakery department of the supermarket. They use lots of icing for baking and generate a lot of pots and they are easy to clean with dish soap. They are usually in the 3 gal to 5 gal sizes. They work well if you don't have access to standard nursery pots.

Really? $20 is a hefty price tag to you???

After growing 5 plants you're going to nit pick a single gram??? REALLY!

Planters can be purchased online and somewhere within 20 minutes you're going to find a plant nursery.
