How/why does direct light on a bud affect its ultimate size?

I'm not really sure, i guess it's just getting more light and grows bigger and faster?
Energy produced by light being absorbed by the leaves through photosynthesis causes the buds to get larger. Light on the buds themselves don't perform this action.

That's what I was thinking. Photosynthesis in the leaves. So why does the bud need so much light?

the bud doesn't need the light. the leaves do
It doesn't. Most of my buds are shadowed by fan leaves until later in flower when the size of buds pushes the leaves out of the way, and after I remove the nearly-dead leaves right at the end of flower.

You're not wrong thinking that. There are many growers who falsely believe that removing fan leaves to get the budsites more light is actually beneficial. By removing fan leaves, you're completely reducing the amount of energy the plant can produce, and therefore, stunt growth and bud formation.

Bud Light sucks. You couldn't pay me to drink that swill. The only thing worse than Bud Light is Coors Light.
Nothing beats a good IPA or Pale Ale. I was fortunate to live in Portland Oregon and experience the microbrew renaissance first hand. Now they want $8 for 12 ounces of some nasty sour in a brandy snifter. These yahoo's today don't know what good beer is.

And there ya go. Thanks.
I just have so many buds that won't see direct light for a while, but couldnt understand why they should benefit from so much light. The leaves make the energy.
