An increasingly bitter California congressional race between two House members of the same party turned physical when one aggressively seized the shoulder of his opponent during a debate, yanked him toward his chest and shouted, "You want to get into this?"
The confrontation Thursday between Democratic Reps. Brad Sherman and Howard Berman came amid a nasty campaign for a Los Angeles-area seat.
The veteran lawmakers are running against each other because of California's new primary system, which sends the top two finishers to the general election regardless of party affiliation.
The lunge by the 57-year-old Sherman appeared to startle Berman, who is 71 and smaller in stature, while the audience hooted and shouted.
Berman's campaign released a video of the confrontation at Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley.
The veteran lawmakers were pulled into the same district after a voter-approved independent panel redrew California's political boundaries. They were the top vote-getters in the June primary and went on to the general election because of California's new primary system, which sends the top two finishers to the runoff regardless of party affiliation.
Their race for the 30th district seat is one of eight same-party congressional runoffs on California's November ballot. Another, in the San Francisco Bay area, involves Democratic Rep. Pete Stark, the longest-serving member of the state's congressional delegation.
Sherman said in a statement that the debate "was not conducted at the highest level. I regret my part in allowing emotions to distract from the exchange of views."
The campaign has seen a series of competing accusations, ranging from suggestions of ethical impropriety to fleecing taxpayers. Earlier Thursday, two former secretaries of state, George Shultz and Madeleine Albright, released a letter defending Berman for taking overseas trips following criticism from Sherman's campaign.

Jerry-rig congressional districts and you will see republicans using their beloved second amendment rights on each other. Republicans can't win fair, so what do they do- Jerry-rigging and voter suppression.

I'm sorry, did this idiot just try to turn a story about two Democrats getting physical into a testamonial against Republicans? Not to mention the painfully obvious factoid from the story. They're having an election in California with both candidates FROM THE SAME PARTY! And you have the nutsack to talk about Jerry-rigged elections?

How Funny.. Both of them have mostly the same political voting record. No matter which gets the district the net voting result will be the same.

One thing we know for sure, Dems get all out of whack if you dont repeat the same as what they have been told to repeat.
Want to be called the worse names ever, want to be attacked, verbally and/or physically abused? Disagree with a "peace loving" Democrat and you will get all of the above. The party of HATE.

This is the sort of thing you actually believe? What does a Republican say of someone who won't put his hand over his heart during the national anthem? what do they repeat when a politician is seen without his little flag lapel pin? The party of hate? have you been watching the hatred spewed by your brethren toward, oh, say, women? the word "slut" comes to mind. Hate? Sununu calling the president lazy isn't hate? the slurs and insults heaped upon this sitting president isn't hate? It is your party that revels in expressions of hatred althor.

It's not my party. All I can say I read stuff on boards that lean both ways and the worst of the slamming and hating comes from the Dems. Im not saying Reps arent doing it as well, but it is overwhelmingly Dems. Read comment sections online and there are a handful of Reps calling Dems names and hitting below the belt, but for every 1 comment like that, there are 4 comments from Dems.
I have found this election season to be eye-opening in several ways and one of those is Dems arent the free-spirits from the past campaigns.

I read and post across many sites and I encounter hatred most often from the right. I see the term "libtard" used constantly and I rarely see an analog from the other side. You may interpret hatred from some of the left on this site but overall, in the real time world, on FOX and blogs it is the right that is constanlty spewing. Ann Coulter is just a loving, kind hearted woman is she? Hannity? a softie? Limbaugh? Wilkow? Malkin? Levin is a sweetie? I get weary of those who accuse the left of hatred when the harshest of the left is Maher - a Comedian.

Actually most people have a negative view on liberals not just republicans, I know a few democrats that would rather you use profanity towards them then call them a liberal. 80% think you guys are the crazy 20%ers so don't be bias.:hump:

Like I said- Due to Jerry Rigging- These two men were sadly pitted up against each other. What happened that night was ridiculous and I strongly condone that kind of behavior. But what on earth are you talking about? Republicans have had their fair share of primary spats themselves. Don't you remember the republic presidential primary??

They're not concerned with the public. They both just want the perks that go with the office. Seems "public service" is very lucrative.
