Can a 630 watt CMH match a 1000 watt HPS?

Well maybe you can answer something for me. What issues if any would there be running a DE cmh hung vertically ?

I have a 3x3 grow tent with a Sun System 315 Watt LEC Fixture with 4,200K Lamp, 120 Volt

Where I am, the temps do get to 50 at night (now) and this light will ONLY add 5 degrees to the tent - nothing more, and usually only 3 degrees between inside and outside the tent. The GOOD part is when the summer comes, it doesn't make the tent very hot. My tent is outside (garage / shed) so running that fixture is NOT good for reducing humidity and NOT good for heating up the tent. But, it sure is good on the electrical bill and it sure is good for taking pictures in the tent/while on, and it does grow well. I'm new to it - so I've been toying the plants between 22' and 14" --- and no matter what space I put it at, the plants NEVER EVER complain.

So, I don't know what is the best distance!!?!? I've been told to use 18" for the light above that I am using. But, I've been doing 16" instead and having no issues with leaves turning over or complaining. Suggestions?
 
I know this thread is a few months old but figures I'd chime in. inregards whether it's better to run 2 - 315w cmh vs 630fixture. I've found that in any tent grow 5x5 or 4x4. it's really better to run the 630w dual bulb fixtures instead of 2 fixtures. reason being having the 315w. bulb In there own hood, create a good amount of par. but the intensity really is limited. with a foot print of 3x3. having 2 fixtures inside a 4x4 or 5x5 is really just hurting your intensity. yeah penetration is a tad better, but again only because or different angles of lighting. the 630w cmh are more intense than a 600w hps and penetrate better. its covers up to a 5x5 footprint. packing two 315w bulbs under the same hood creates a very intense light that covers the entire tent area. so why sacrafice that much better penetration for better spread in an areawhere your already completely covering it with a 630. I yielded 700 grams in a 5x5 with only 6 plants and having the tent two thirds full . easily over a gram per watt and wasnt even scrogging either

Agree to some level ... I have run 630 for the past three years and id argue it does run hot... ok yea it’s not gavita hot but you aren’t coming near touching a bulb like you might with a T5 ... I’ve been running it in a 2 x 4 which is definitely tight however to your point the intensity is serious (like it will give you a headache if you are under it for extended periods of time NOT RECOMMENDED!!!)

Have maxed out that setup at 750g so that’s 1.19 on the 630w

Due to changes in the house the room is now inordinately expensive to cool so I’m switching to a 315w and putting in a light mover (yea in a 2x4 to move it one foot) ... my thought here is to cut the heat but with reflection and minimal light movement I should be able to bring the light in a little closer and maintain solid intensity (yes it still won’t be the 630 I realize) but I’m thinking i should still be able to maintain at least 1.19 on the 315w is 378... somehow that low of a number doesn’t seem to make sense to me so I’m putting the goal at 500

and i can definitely agree with you there. fact is these 630s do put off some heat. because not only are you running 2 bulbs in the same hood vs dispersing and spacing your heat out. the ballasts are also connected to the fixture with cmh. adding some heat to area as well. the kind of results i get though justify paying the extra 30 bucks a month to run my portable ac

Just to keep all you guys up to date with the latest CMH products there is now a single bulb 500w CMH/LEC fixture that houses a single bulb like the 315w version but a 500w version. And also there is a DE 1000w CMH fixture that has been in manufacturers hands for some time but they are slowly getting released to the public, there was an issue due to the DE 1000w CMH bulb not having a long life and not lasting very long in the fixture so they tried to come up with a DE bulb which housed 3 x 315w arcs, I do believe the 1000w CMH fixtures are still being tested in the field.

500w CMH? Link please. Would I be wrong in assuming that this would be close to perfect in a 4 x 4 flowering tent?

I can't confirm, but I think I read somewhere that the spectrum isn't as good as the Phillips 3100k 315 bulbs.

I could be completely wrong, and if so, somebody please chime in.

This is the 500w CMH fixture and bulb. They dim from 300w 400w 500w and 550w

The spectrum of the 500w CMH fixture and bulb is as good as all CMH bulbs on the market give or take, but nothing will be better than Philips but there all not that far off, meaning the Philips 315w bulbs are not a million miles appart from any other 315w CMH bulb on the market there all close specs, the only thing that’s a million miles appart is the price of the Philips bulbs, but the 500w will blow the 315w CMH away. And so will the DE 630w CMH, the Philips 315w CMH bulbs are great but no 315w will compete against a DE 630w CMH bulb or a single ended 500w CMH bulb.

I've had a brief conversation with Sonny from Sunplix and he was recommending the 400w cmh for a 4 x 4 for flower. Im a tad sceptical that the 400cmh would be much of an upgrade on a 600w HPS. My thinking was the 500CMH my be a better fit.
Are you running a 400 in a 4 x 4 by any chance?

I got the de 630 and it was pumping a shit ton of light out well past my old 1000 watt setups. It was covering my 8x8 test room with stupid amount of light.

I've been told a 1k de cmh is to much for a 5x5? I've been thinking very seriously about putting one in my 5x5x7 tent
