can a shallow 4' by 4' be used for DWC/bubbleponic setup?

Hi all,
I'm about to get going on another grow and I've got a bit of different idea. I found excellent huge containers that are 4' wide by 4' long by 10" deep. I am thinking of doing 5 plants in that in a dice pattern; one in the centre, 4 in the corners. The whole container will stand on wooden beams a couple inches off the ground so I can attach an openable drain to the bottom to make draining into a nearby drain very quick & easy (a filter inside the container will keep roots from clogging the drain). 8 airstones off one pump will enter the container to ensure lots of oxygen and bubbling all over the 16 square feet. The pots for the plant will be the 2" ones. My only concern is that the container is only 10" deep. If the pots are 2" and I gotta leave an inch before the water, that means the water in this whole system will be barely 6.5-7" deep. Is that enough? will the roots simply head outward if they dont have much room to grow downward? has anyone ever tried a shallow DWC like this? Thanks! Good replies will be rewarded with rep!

I "think" the main problem you may run into with a wide shallow DWC is that evaporation and temperature will be less controllable. More surface area means it will warm up and dry out quicker.

Aleksandr2010: wouldn't that be more suitable to growing with a flood and ebb on a coconut pad?
