I wash my buckets often and don't want to screw around with paint coming off in my sink. The roots never see any light anyway. I never do anything if I consider it unnecessary; too busy for that
 
I chose a 5 bucket system to search- So search [RDWC 5 buckets], in bubbleponics.. Then do some reading.. This advice is all the spoon feeding you need to get you started.. Almost all the the questions you've got are answered in those threads..
