Can you transplant only wider and not taller?

I was wondering if you can transplant into a much wider pot but not taller. I am currently in a 5 gal and I need to transplant before I switch to flower. My problem is I am height limited. Would going to say a 25 gal and cutting to the current height I have and basically adding width be ok? Hoping with the fabric pots the roots will be ok and grow out more to compensate for less height.
 
Cool. Transplanting tomorrow, then after recovering from that I’ll give her 2 weeks to really take the new soil, then switch. 5 gal fabric pot taking 1.5 gal water a day for last few days so it’s time

Suggest watering away from the plant to encourage root spread quickly. You won’t see much activity probably and it’s not transplant shock. It’s waiting for the roots to find boundaries.
 
I transplanted a rootbound plant from a 5 g bucket to a 20 gallon planter last year. She exploded with growth shortly after. Well worth it fir sure. Your girls gonna love it.
 
I bought a 20 and a 30 gal, not sure which I’m gonna go with. The 30 gal almost fills the tent, so I’d have to move my intake blower that sits in a bottom corner to outside the tent and until I get the shelf hung above the tent for both blowers I don’t have the space. I’ll post tomorrow which one I went with. Only thinking 30 in case I decide to veg longer. It is in a 3’x3’ by itself, but might have to move it to the 4’x4’ due to height (still have some repair work on the corners and edges before it is in service though), and I don’t want to try and move a full 30 gal out of a tent that barely fits. Such a dilemma.
 
So I went into a 20 gal, rolled the sides down a bit to equal the height a 5 gal, so guessing is now a little over 15 gal, should be ample room through flower stage even though I’m going to veg for another few weeks. Guess now I have to decide to move tents or not, I think I have to but what do you all think? Currently 20” top of plant to light, and I can raise the light about 6”. If I switch tents I’ll have that plus another 18”, but bigger tent also lesser quality, light and air leaks everywhere.

Switch tents.
 
Tiny light leaks are of no consequence in my opinion. I use and have used cheap tents that have tiny leaks and haven't had any issues in 4 years. I don't worry about mine being air tight, but that may matter in your particular situation. The bigger the better is my way of thinking. There's always duct tape...lol
 
Gonna duct tape the crap out of the edges and corners, finish the ventilation, and sterilize, then switch. She is growing so fast I’d like to give her awhile to veg some more
 
I switched tents. Made my own screen, first time for any of this so we will see, I’m learning. Any constructive criticism is welcomed please, I could use the help

When you up pot, it's good to take a knife or razor and score the sides and bottom of the root ball about 1/4" deep into the soil. This encourages the roots to bust outwards into the new soil.
