CFL – Seedling? Help!

Hello,

Very new to the growing world, I have my grow room constructed and ready to go when my plants hit the vegetative growth phase.

I just have a small question regarding the use of CFL. What wattage is necessary when dealing with recently germinated seedlings (5 seeds need looking after)?

Also, would 10 cm distance from the CLF be enough?

Grow room dimensions are at: 60x60x140 cm.

Any advice would be much appreciated!!!

On my seedlings i have them almost touching the plant, Make sure you don't burn your leaves either . That's the #1 thing , don't burn your leaves

Thanks for the advice easygrinder & doobiee. Really appreciate it!
I will take note of the distance accordingly. Is there an optimum CFL wattage I could purchase for the delicate seedling phase?

the most common watt for CFL in a hardware store is 23 watt BUT use the highest CFL 6500k watt bulb you can find!!

10 cm is too far for a newly sprouted plant?

Like, the day my seed sprouts, how far should a 42w 6500K cfl be? RIght now my CFL is like 8 inches away. Too far?

I read somewhere that I should start my CFL out a little further away, and then slowly bring it closer over the course of 3-4 days, giving the sprout a few days to handle full light. Does this make sense?

Chipp, I think that the use of a 42w 6500k CFL needs to commence at least 8 inches away from a newly sprouted seed, 'letting it adapt' to its surroundings. As you stated, ‘give it a few days’. Then you can bring it in closer!

I will be in the same boat as you as I will be using 3 CFLs: 5 watt, 10 watt & 30 watt connected to a reflector.

Pictures will be posted up in due course once the seedlings have germinated - Skywalker from Dutch Passion, should be nice

1 - when I started seeds for the first time I had 1 seedling under 3 45w 65ooK 3000 lumes and it grew alot in a short amount of time
2 - You can have a 45w CFL 1 inch from the top of your plant and not burn it.

Energy Saving bulbs tend to lose a critical number of critical lumens if not close to seedlings. Given the constant research I am undertaking with my own setup, I would recommend possibly purchasing another energy saving bulb (if the funds are available) and moving them within 1-2inchs of plants to avoid over stretching. Just keep a close eye/hand on possibility of burning your little treasures! Regulate distance as plants grow.
