CFL vs HID

Saw a video on youtube about using large (200 watt) cfl's for grow lights. Like the idea of saving electric and keeping heat down. Are they a waste of time????

What about using them in conjunction with HID's. If you have links to grow logs, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!!

Large CFL's are nice, but......................

I really like the smaller wattage cfl's because they allow you to "increase" the overall coverage of the lighting.......

Growing with cfl's requires you to keep the distance between the 'canopy' and the 'bulbs' to a minimum.......I like keeping that distance down to 1-3 inches.....

I find that if you have many bulbs, vs just a couple of big bulbs, you'll be able to spread the usable light out and more evenly across the entire canopy......plus you can mix the spectrum more between 2700k and 6500k.....

Just my opinion......

Good luck!

CFL's, I'd go 8 or 10 23W CFL's over one 200W CFL. No single point of failure, and you can get the bulbs nice and close to more of the canopy. Read up on CFL light penetration. CFL's are considerably cooler than HID.

Yes you can use CFL's with HID, lots of people do.

The smaller ones are way cheaper also. Can you (or anyone) point me to a good tek on creating cfl light arrays.

Thanks!!

Single point of failure is a concern. Will probably use small HID, and small CFL's.

Thanks!!!
