Chinese Take Out.

I'll leave this here..

  • Arian Taherzadeh, 40, and Haider Ali, 36, were taken into custody on Wednesday for allegedly posing as fake Homeland Security officers
  • The goal was apparently to ingratiate themselves with the Secret Service, though it is unclear what they had hoped to gain from that
  • Since 2020, charging documents allege, they supplied Secret Service agents with rent-free luxury apartments, high-end electronics and policing equipment
  • In one instance, Taherzadeh even allegedly offered a member of First Lady Jill Biden's security detail with a $2,000 assault rifle
  • And in another, they supplied an agent with a penthouse apartment valued at more than $40,000 a year
  • Four members of the Secret Service have now been placed on leave as the investigation continues
How the hell did they have a select-fire long gun!?

you have to try the cream cheese wontons, but get the egg foo yong gravy instead of the sweet and sour sauce, so fucking good
I hate those

wonton should be stuffed with shrimp and spring onion and served in broth, like I had in Hong Kong in '76

My wife and I used to like to go to a Chinese buffet in Phoenix ~1983 called Kwan's- they had the best broccoli beef ever

anyway, one time we arrived just as these two old grizzled bikers were leaving on their Harleys (which weren't nearly as nice as the Harleys owned by the lawyers and dentists who own them these days) and the one says to the other in his grizzly harley guy voice, "you gotta go potty?"

We used to go to a Korean joint down by the college called Hana's- my favorite dish was called "spicy prok" on the menu

One time I absent-mindedly walked out with one of their plastic water glasses, which I still use every day ~20 years later

i don't think it's in business anymore, but my favorite place in Fargo was called Phil Wong's, home of the rickshaw man...
they had the best pepper steak i've ever had, and egg foo yong i could eat till i made myself sick on it
i live in Tn now, and the ONLY good chinese food i've had was when my friends mom cooked it, they're third generation immigrants from Guangzhou, which was Canton, so it's yue food, dim sum, white chicken, hefen noodles, eight bao melon bowls, and sampan congee...
i haven't talked to them in a while, might be time to give him a call, see if i can get invited to dinner :weed:

A paywall set up but I do not like the sound of it.

What would happen if mainland China cut off Taiwan’s energy supplies?
  • The island is spending millions on missile defence systems but it could have another major vulnerability
  • A blockade against oil and gas shipments could be a less risky option than military action for Beijing, observers say
This is the first in a two-part series on tensions between mainland China and Taiwan. Here, Jack Lau looks at what would happen if mainland China cut off Taiwan’s energy supplies. Another sale went through last week.
On Tuesday the Pentagon gave the green light to a US$95 million contract with Taiwan for equipment and training for the island’s Patriot missile defence system.

Depends on your take-out place, I guess?

When my favorite closed, I was eventually forced to come up with an acceptable hot & sour soup…which led to me not really doing takeout anymore. Not religious re: MSG, just don’t have any & no experience using it.

I just eat fresh home-made soup 3-4x/week. Like Italian-style tomato-based meat sauce, it’s a staple of my diet.

Yes, the specific restaurant is the main factor

For traditional take-out,

Best: Dry fried green beans when done right.

or maybe Ma Po tofu. Or maybe Eggplant in garlic sauce Or maybe Honey walnut shrimp. But I also like Szechuan chicken.

I'd be happy with any of them over rice.

For a banquet, order a whole steamed fish. Order in advance and most will make it for take-out.

Recently the Chinese cooking scene has added some new dishes

Dry pots are really good. Dry pot cauliflower or shrimp dry pot or rib dry pot
Roast duck is good but absolutely depends on the restaurant

Dining in: a good dim sum lunch. Can't get anything like it here but I lived near SF for a while and am hooked.

You just can't replicate Chinese Takeout at home without it.
you are right. But it adds a lot of sodium. Too much for every day fare, so I leave it out when home cooking. I home cook chinese food a lot and don't want to have that much sodium on a frequent basis. I leave that for the occasions when I get take-out.

For ten years or so I always ordered the same dish at a local chinese place- shrimp chow mein

so one day I came walking in and the cashier girl and the cook were talking in chinese

For some reason I was in the mood for something different so I ordered beef chow mein and the girl gave the cook a dollar

I asked her if they were betting on me and she said yes
