hey gang,

So i made a batch last night of just straight coconut oil, i've done this before with success and other times failure ( really need to start logging all my methods), and it was a failure, no effects for the most part.

my dosage was fine, the calculated dose was 0.10g per portion of coconut oil, which adds up to be more that a standard brass bong cone piece.

the method used was:

3.5g ground bud wrapped in foil and decarbed at 248 f (120 c) for 30 minutes in an electric oven, admittedly i didn't use a temp gun to confirm temps so that is one issue to rule out.

added about 300-350 ml of coconut oil, set multi cooker on slow cooker high for 4 hours + 4 hours of keep warm, i did temp gun the keep warm setting in the morning at 158 f (70 c), on a trail run with water on high slow cook at 30 min in temps were at 158 f (70 c) with the temp gun, yet unsure on what 4 hours would result in, will try water tomorrow to see what temps are at after 4 hours on high slow cooker to rule out heat creep etc.

so with my decarb at 248 f for 30 min and my slow cooker on high for 8 hours as the keep warm setting was at 158 f that = to 8 hours:

Are there any problems with my method?

would appreciate any feedback

IDK what other people use per 350 ml of coconut oil when slow cooking in a crock pot.
You used 3.5g of weed? Doesn't sound like much. My method is different and includes water, but I run 80 grams of weed through 500ml of coconut oil them separate and run another 80 grams of weed. A strong dose of mine is 2 ml. I never decarb.

I also make coconut oil, but I put everything straight in the crock pot and let the bud decarb directly in the hot oil. After about an hour on high it gets to around 250F and CO2 bubbles start forming, then I leave it there to cook/decarb for another hour, then just turn it off to cool. If I do it at night, by the morning it's usually still liquid and cool enough to squeeze through a cheesecloth. If I wait too long sometimes I need to heat it back up just enough to re-melt the oil.

Your timing may vary depending on the "high" temp of your slow cooker and how long it takes to get there, but imo decarbing in the oil is the way to go if you can do it.

Maybe you cooked it too long and over-decarbed the bud...? I would check the temp of the oil as you go and try not to let it stay over 250F for more than an hour.

It's also possible that your dosage is too low. My tolerance is pretty low, and I usually go for about .25 - .3 grams per serving. Obviously it uses more material than a bong rip, but lasts a lot longer... Good luck! :bigjoint:

I was thinking the same thing. My typical recipe as of late is a 14 oz (400 mL) jar of coconut oil with 20-25 grams of bud, and after straining I'm left with about 350 mL of oil. A dose for me is about a teaspoon (5 mL), so overall it's roughly half the strength of yours, per serving.

I do things in a similar fashion except I run the crock pot on low for 8 hours and figure it decarbs while cooking. Each session the weed gets really stinky for 5 or 6 hours. I have a wine press that I use with cheese cloth to squeeze out the liquid. I'll also take the refrigerated block of coconut oil and mix it with fresh water a second time at the end and separate them one last time to get it clean.

I figure low and slow would work just as well, as long as gets warm enough to decarb and has some time for the THC to bind to the oil. I used to do the whole decarb in the oven, cook in a mixture of oil and water thing, it was a real a-ha moment when I found out it could all be done with just oil and a crock pot.

For starters your dose is way too low. I have made many batches up to a litre at a time and use at minimum 1g of bud/sugar trim for every 10g of coconut oil and one tsp would catch me a nice buzz depending on the strength of the pot used. Yours is 10X weaker than that so you would need to take 10tsp/50ml to get the same effect. Nothing wrong with that as coconut oil is very healthy especially for the brain.

Crock pots are not great for this unless you use a variac to increase the input voltage to around 120%. I use a laser thermometer to monitor temps so find one on sale and get one but a cheap candy thermometer from a thrift store would work too.

I decarb in the oil at the end of about an hour of lower temp around 200 to get a good extraction. I'll slowly raise the temp until I see very fine bubbles starting around 235F and not let the temp get over 250. Stirring every few minutes until there is a lot less bubbles but still a few then take off the heat and strain. If you go too long THC breaks down rapidly into CBN which helps with sleep so if that's one of the properties you want from your edibles then go 10 min past when there are no more fine bubbles.

A stovetop or hotplate work fine for this but put some metal screen or bent up coat hanger on the element to prevent scorching. Works good for sauces or milk-based soups too.

Rather than spell everything out here check out my sig for more detailed instructions but you can skip the part about boiling off the water if using already dry pot.

Edit: Don't throw away the squeezed out pot as it is still potent medicine. Use a large freezer bag to spread it out in then store in the freezer flat so you can easily take out chunks to add to smoothies or baked goods. I use a potato ricer lined with two layers of cheesecloth to press out as much oil as possible. Freeze it in one big lump and you'll need a chain saw or a hatchet to break it up. ;)

:peace:
