There has to be some kind of legal, documented proof/evidence, all these issues stem from the lack of it, so how do you suggest you legitimize such a process without the government? In order for something to be legally recognized, there has to be an institution that provides that, and without that, legitimate recognition doesn't exist. Use the driver's license as an example, I could just say I'm a driver now, I know how to drive, whatever, but without the legal recognition of it by way of affirmation of passing the driving test, how would anyone know whether I'm qualified to operate a motor vehicle or not?

If it doesn't involve the government, then the involved parties can come up with something that works for THEM can't they?

There has to be something that the involved parties voluntarily agree to for it to be "legitimate". Illegitimacy is present when duress is there. You have it backwards.

Were slaves property or human beings before they were ahem "legitimately" assigned human status?

My relationship is very good, we both consented to it and really like it. Neither of us consent to asking permission of others to be in our relationship. Slaves had to get massa's permission to jump the broom though....nothing has changed for many people has it?

In fact when some modern cannon fodder slaves were drafted into the military it is very comparable to being "sold down the river".
