Hey guys I'm new here and on my first attempt to grow. I'm trying to run on pure led if possible. I already have a 300w led in my tent but I want to have about 1000w. I know where to get 50 *3wLeds soldered on to the {board*?} But I don't know exactly what other parts I need. I know its heatsink and a power supply. But what kind and how do I assemble it. If anyone has a list of the supplies needed for one and where I can buy the gear I would GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.by the way I'm limited to a mobile phone right now so I can't watch YouTube videos right. So sorry if you think I'm too lazy to look it up its just that I'm on limited technology right now.

I know one, ill look for the link. A guy made a big one and has a whole diy led website for it. give me a second to find it.

Cant find it yet. It was a really good one that was on a whole diy led site that had grow lights and car light mods as well.

Still lookin haha

Is it a multichip, or are there 50 separate LED's soldered to an mcpcb?

This can probably cool a 50W multichip.

This can cool a ~75W multichip easily.

You'll need a 12VDC x ~100-200mA power supply to power the fan. Not sure on the driving current of either fan, so make sure the PSU matches.

To find the driver that you need, go to eBay and type "[#]A [#]V LED driver" where [#] is the number of Amps or Volts that the technical spec sheet of your LED's recommends driving them at.

Hi, when you use the led grow lights for your plant, there are two points you need to pay attention: 1. Do not set the lights to high from your plant.
2. make sure the lighting be turn on 8 hours :smile:

Hey Jackbukc, welcome to the wacky world of LED grow lighting! :) For another take on LED lighting have a look at Captainmorgan's Cree LED bulb grow. He is using nothing but them on one of his grows and doing great. Just wanted to pass that along for another LED perspective. Best of luck on your build and your grow! :)

Thanks guys. Been looking into it and i think i might just end up getting a few of these.

I have a 28W grow panel im going to work with first. (Cheaper parts) It has 112 leds(5mm I believe). I want to make them all 1w and put a new 100w power driver for my little 2x1x2 cabinet grow spot.

Alibaba also seems tempting I could have gotten a 700w mars 2 for $350 shipped but i dont really trust it.

Well thanks guys you can still use this thread to post up instructions and list of supplies for leds.

Save those sellers if you do get them.

Those do look very tempting and same with the mars. If you do get them you should report back on them because everyone wonders about those cheap led panels. Now that leds have been arond for a little longer.

Well i already have the 300w led from amazon. I seem to like it so far but i always have supplemental light with cfls. I keep it 12 inches away and no stretching. i want to try the ufos there are some about 270w that seems like alot for such a small thing but need to wait till the15th to order me some new gear.

I have a 3x2x5 grow tent even if i had leds all around the walls it still wouldnt penetrate to the inside right? So no matter what im guna need cfls or hps for more weight in my buds?

Another noob question.. would a 300w led use the same amount of energy as a 300w mh (i know they dont exist well i dont think they do)

And they say a 300w led is like having a 600w mh?? How is that possible.. perfect spectrum?

Totally possible, just not with your 300w panel. That 300w light you have is not very good and the reason you think if you surrounded the walls it still wouldn't be enough. If you did that with good panels it would be beyond over kill. For a 3x2 space a a51 sgs160 will cover just fine. You will get the growth of a 400-600 hps for just 155w. Then you could dump that 300w waste.

Don't cut corners and get something that performs.

Until someone more knowledgeable than I chimes in I can explain to you what I have learned so far.

First of all, LED light panels use a fraction of the watts that HPS/MH are rated for. When you see a 400/600/1000 watt HPS/MH that is exactly what they draw from your wall socket as well as what they are putting out. LED's use much less because of the efficiency of the small, solid-state light emitting diodes that they are. When you see a 300 watt LED panel it is speaking of the output wattage not the consumed wattage it is drawing to run it. It takes much less power to run an LED than any other lighting type that I know of. If you check the rating on your LED panel or the box or documentation it came with you will see and input and an output wattage. The input wattage is what it uses to run it and the output is what it pushes out to the surrounding area.

That being said, although LED's use much less power to run them and can have a much better PAR spectrum depending on the wavelengths of the diodes used, they lack in light intensity. HPS and MH have so much intensity, albeit in not the greatest of PAR spectrum, it seems they force the plants to grow extremely well. Sadly, most of the power they consume then put out is wasted because of the low PAR so all that intensity is used to hit a few peak wavelengths and drive photosynthesis. One advantage of LED panels is that they put out very little heat so they do not have to be cooled by large fans and ducting and you can put them very close to the plant tops which allows what intensity they have to reach more of the plants' leaves.

As for LED manufacturers claiming HPS/MH equivalents, I am sure a lot of they is industry hype but to be fair there may be some high output LED panels out there that are extremely good at what they do and are pushing ever closer to the ability of HPS/MH to grow great plants. The problem is there is so much hype and just flat out lies when it comes to LED panels from crooked dealers that it is very, very hard to tell what is true and what is not. That is why I would discourage the purchase of 'cheap' LED panels from sources out there because it's like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get. :) Basically you get what you pay for and that is unfortunate indeed.

On another note, I have recently discovered light rails. You hang the panel from it and it slowly moves the panel back and forth over your grow. This can have amazing results because instead of the light being stationary and missing undergrowth, the light moves and is able to shine on more leaves and help grow bushier, more healthy plants, IMHO. That could very well be the answer to your dilemma.

I hope that helps Jack. :)

Hey Jack, did you see I responded to your questions? Let me know if any of that makes sense.

Hey Tags, does Area51 only carry the one panel, SGS160?

Great info guys. You have no idea how much i appreciate it. I was away doing research on leds and the equipment needed to make one. So far i have found 60 piece led circuit boards for $8 each on ebay. 100pieces of red 3w leds for $45; blue for $35. 200w LED driver (12v dc) $48. Heatsink with fan $5-$7.
All i need is a power cord and a frame or chassis for mounting everything.? Or do i still need a separate power supply before the driver?

I think thats wrong. Its more Marketing. 3W leds r often run with like 2W, it depends on the max Rating of the led. But often they sustain a higher Peak Forward current of like 1000mA, so pulsed they can run with like 3,5W. Or cheap manufacturers just avoid Problems by running them on lower amps. W is just V x Amps. Not saying they r not trying to fool People, but it has nothing to do with Input/Output stuff...imo.
200w LED driver (12v dc) $48
links to your stuff? i think that wont be a constant current Driver, which is what you would Need. without external circutry u cant just use something like a Computer psu. Ok, on the pic it Looks right. Recarding the pics, that alu plate for mounting the leds, you would Need soldering paste and like an oven, because you just cant solder the leds to that Thing with a soldering iron

That CPU cooler won't cool that mcpcb, it's not big enough. Yes, it should be able to dissipate the Watts, but you'd need some type of heat spreader to get the heat away from the LED's and to the CPU cooler. Otherwise only LED's that sit directly underneath, or close to, the CPU cooler will see its effect.

I made a few panels with mcpcb's and 1W diodes like that. They've gone through a full harvest and show no indication of stopping. Let me know if you need help.

maybe its a better idea/easier to get leds already mounted on star and attach These to one large heatsink plate, with thermal paste or pads. For the alu plate shown in pic i think you Need to reflow in oven/ or an industrial blower/heater, also if one led Fails you Need to be able to detach it. also i think reflow soldering paste isnt cheap...Or how did u do it Bumping Spheda?
