Do YOU think catch & release is the best option after you catch the fish?

Here the intro to the subject and my opinion. But i am way too lazy. All I'm gonna say is that if you are gonna attach a hook to the fish then drag him all the way up to the top/shore you might as well eat it.

I know some people practice catch and release when they catch endangered species, but why would you fish where there endangered species? By dragging the fish above you are already risking killing it.

mods: don't hate me i didn't find the outdoors section and fishing is a recreational activity i think.

Freshwater I would be picky about eating there are some dirty bodies of water out there. Saltwater just make sure it's an edible fish, and not next to the treatment plant.

If you keep all the fish next time there won't be as many to catch. Nothing wrong with keeping some if you go on a fishing trip because that's the whole point but imo if you're fishing around where you live throw them back so they can be caught another day. Is the fight not why we fish in the 1st place?

Now, if you've ever fished in a pond where all the bass are pretty much the same size, 12-15 inches and nothing bigger then that pond needs thinned out. Keep some of the fish there, that's fine. They get stunted when the population gets too high. Who likes catching small fish, no one. We want the big ones.

I usually fish for fresh water Kokanee (small sockeye) and land locked larger Sockeye in the summer. If I catch a trout I almost always release it, doesn't taste nearly as good. If I think the fish won't survive I will keep it and cook it. Most are released without incident, you would be surprised how long they will stay alive on a stringer behind the boat or even out of the water. If I catch a protected species like Bull Trout (in some lakes anyway) I take the hook out below the water line the fish never comes much out of the water and survives just fine IMO.
We usually take less food than we need so we have some motivation to catch fish.

Can't wait to dine on some fresh caught kokanee!

We eat fish 3-4 times a week. I don't think I've ever bought fish other than at a restaurant.

Don't fish unless you are hungry? LOL. Fuck that, fish so when you are hungry you have something good to eat in the freezer.

I actually think if any fish should be kept it should be the smaller ones rather than the big ones. Big fish generally mean that they've been around a while, know their shit and are sexually mature, therefore one could say that the bigger fish have a potentially a 'better' DNA than the unproven sexually imature small fish hence incapable of reproduction like its bigger counterparts.
So i think it makes more sense to keep the smaller ones and release the big ones so that the gene pool can have some of those old fish genes about.

I keep fish only if they are the size limit , any big breaders i always throw back .
I only keep enough for that night to eat (don't like freezing fish )
All about sustainabillity , i want to make sure the younger generation has enough fish to have fun like i did growing up !

I go trout fishing just about every other week during the summer and I throw back most of them. The biggest one I caught was 15 and 1/2 and I threw it back. Which is about as big as they get here.

Biggest I ever saw was an 18 inch rainbow.

I mostly trout fish, generally just keep one for dinner put the rest back ( if I get lucky). Where i am our stalks are low so gotta think bout next generation! When salmon fishing where I am it's the law to put first fish back!
