Does height vs. width of plant pots matter?

Im in need of bigger pots and looking at the fabric ones on ebay, however I noticed they're far wider than they are tall. Will this inhibit the growth of the plants or is sideways root growth just as good as vertical?

I grow with the fabric pots a lol. The cheap ones such as "Ruths Farm" version work just as well. In my experience roots tend to grow in a umbrella pattern in "smart pots". They don't utilize the entire depth, the roots spread out first, then go deeper. I have read other threads on this same phenomenon. It has not caused me any issues, but I have always been under the impression the cannabis grows down via a large tap root. I see know real difference between using these pots and the conventional pots to be honest. It sound good, allowing more air to the roots, but the price is much higher than buying regular plastic pots. But like I said before I run them all the time and they do get the job done for sure.
My experience has been with 3 gallon and 5 gallon pots, nothing close to 25 gallons. And yeah 16" seems a little short for a pot that size to me. I don't know if you are interested but you can buy Roots Organic soil and it comes in a grow bag. so you can just open it, transplant your plant and have it growing in 1.5 cubic feet of soil. That would save you on pots and give yourself some decent organic soil to start out with.

Here's a male 1 month old in a 20 gal fabric pot. I usually use 5 gal but I'm going to stick on in a big pot and see what the difference is. Weed doesn't have a tap root. Look up monocot and dicot are compare the root structure

Weed will grow in whatever pot you put it in. It's mostly whatever is better for you. If you have a shorter space but want big plants. Wider is probably better. If you want more plants and have a taller space, the taller would work better.

Cannabis is a dicot and all the information I read tends to say that dicots have tap roots. I may be wrong, but I don't think I am.

I may or may not have worked on a commercial farm and the fabric pots there were HUGE. Definitely wider, somewhat shallow pots.
