Does using dishwashing soap kill fungus gnat larvae without damaging soil or the plant?

I have watered too much and now zi have a few fungus gnats flying around. I've been told that adding dish washing soap to your watering can and then watering the soil will kill thr larvae. If this is true, I would like to know how it doesn't damage the plan or soil.
