People can rationalize anything, even feeding women and children into gas chambers, so thinking up reasons why you deserve a raise and everybody else doesn't is not difficult at all! Fear narrows the focus to the object of fear, think of how intense a child's concertation is on a scary story, now feed another version of it to a magat on foxnews. The imminent threat of invasion for instance, when caravan season arrives just as election season does and the foxnews will follow the progress of the brown horde as it makes it way to the border! For all we know they could pay for the whole fucking show and give them gas money for the trip north.
