It appears to be growing in cocoa. Very dry cocoa. I would flush with milk and give it a marshmallow top dressing.

I defoliate hard but differently, i do lollipopping and at this point i only keep the very top of each branch as i found everything under the canopy would be small and not worth it.. I'm not sure what the gain will be doing it how you are doing it? you seem to be getting more bushy under the canopy that will just grow smaller buds anyway? (which i normally throw away cause i hate trimming) just curious what's the upside here?
