First Grow, an Evolving Effort

Yeah, they've got about 6.5 more hours before bed time, so I'm gonna leave them under the light while I go bake at a friend's place, and when I get back I'll get some good pics up.

Hopefully by the end of the night those features will have progressed a bit more (the rate at which they appear reminds me of the initial vigor with which the seedlings first began to explode onto the scene).

Also, that extra growth may be some pigme-sized leaves (remember that #4 was under-sized with its secondary sets). I'll be sure and make the pics tonight comprehensive.
I'll be keeping an eye out for them pics. :bigjoint:

So here's the scoop.

#1 is a male.
#2 is a female.
#3 is a male.
#4 is a female (or a hermie, that's still up in the air).
#5 is too soon to tell.
#6 is painfully male.
#7 is also too soon to tell.

I didn't include pics of 4 (it was being fidgety and there was already a shot of it in the last day), or 5 and 7 (the party cup plants which are still a bit immature).

It hurts to part ways with my two favorites, #1 and #3, but I've been preparing myself for this day. Soon as I can decide how best to dispose of them I will do so.

All confirmed males have been up-rooted and #1 is sitting lazily inside his bucket, as I haven't yet had the heart to finish the job. There are now four plants in the cabinet. It feels like American Idol.

I hope you have Nemo around still cause from what I can see its still too early to tell.

I agree on most of what you have identified though. Keep an eye on #2 as well. Just watch the "confirmed" females (always) as they sometimes hermie later on in flower.

Unfortunately, by the end of the night, Nemo had multiple clusters of balls on him, some even beginning to hoist out on their little stems :(

I know this has been brought up before, but due to my recent agreement with my mother, and knowing now that I won't be able to grow again after this crop for about a year (shit) I would really like to get an experiment with SoG going. What if I put one plant into an 8" pot, and then I set up four or so clones, and try both methods to compare yield results? With LST and fimming I'm pretty sure I could get a good yield, and I already bought cloning hormone on an impulse trip to the Meijer Garden aisle. Side note, my later attempts at fimming provided great results (one branch turned into four and another was headed toward at least four before the plant was killed).

Thoughts? I know it's not the noob-friendliest undertaking but I think all things considered I've been having success with most aspects of this grow. Cloning doesn't seem too much harder, and I could take them soon before flowering fully starts.

Pfft, cloning isn't as hard as some make it sound. Do your research (as always) and apply what you learn. Ask questions when in doubt, and all will be fine. :leaf:

i found this journal last night...been reading all day.....it inspired me to start one of my own. The plants look good...i like your set up....check it out i would love some advice. Im currently experimenting wil LST as well... Im going for a SOG my next harvest.

Peace

ps. i saw that you bought your supplies at home depot...i used to but found lows to be alot better with stocking 3 piece light fixtures,65k cff ( which were cheaper at lows) and pretty much everything else i need

It's definitely tough. I apologized to them beforehand.

Funny you should mention that, they've been in 12 12 for a week :)

Yes, I am definitely trying to keep them small. I will be using a combination of LST, fimming, topping, and cloning to try and get the most yield for my space. Unfortunately, my smallest plants were the girls (not the plants' fault, just unfortunate I couldn't give them bigger pots before today.) Hopefully they'll take advantage of their new real estate and then I'll be able to get the clones after they stretch a bit.

Sorry, I missed this post somehow. First, thanks for the compliments. I started my grow journal after reading someone else's as well...it can be very motivating :D

I'll look at Lowes. Wherever there is a Home Depot around here, there is a Lowes nearby. I could sure use higher wattage bulbs for flowering.

I'll also definitely go check out your journal. I'm jealous already of your strains.

Yeah at lowes i found 3 bulb ballasts for like 6 bucks and contractor packs of (4) 27w 6500k cfls for 9.97 on clearance! bought like 3 packs and 3 ballasts to make a hanging 9 bulb fixture... cost about 60 bucks. with the bulbs being the most expensive part. Home depot didnt have any 6500k they had 5500k.

Seems like lowes had a lot more stuff for us MJ horticulturalists.
The owner of lowe's probably grows!

I just went to Lowe's today and unfortunately the had no special deals on 2700k bulbs, so I was only able to pick up one bulb for like 10 dollars. It's a big sucker though with like 2500 lumens output, so I mounted it in the middle of my upper fixture. I'm excited to see how it changes growth.

150w equivalent, 40w actual, 2700k spectrum, 2720 lumens output.

That brings my lighting setup details to:

5x 26w CFL - Daylight spectrum - approx 900 lm each, totaling 4500 lm
+
1x 40w CFL - 2700k spectrum - approx 2700 lm
=
in the square foot space between the two light panels, there are 6200 lumens covering all spectrums with almost half that total lumen output being in the proper spectrum for flowering.

I'll get some pictures tomorrow afternoon. We've got about 8 pistils present per plant right now. I think I will name them soon because I'm a fag like that. I also began soaking soil tonight to prep for a cloning tomorrow just to make sure I know what I'm doing.

I think on March 20th I'm going to begin a tolerance break in anticipation of April 20th. This will be my first properly observed 4/20 so I think it only makes sense that I get fucking stupid ripped before then.

I know that while waiting to harvest, people sometimes take and dry samples to see what traits are present in the high at that particular stage. Let's say they really get their flower going next week...do we think that in the span of about a month I might have something from which I could snip just a small sample to try on 4/20? I won't do it if it's not a good idea, but I think it would be a fun way to celebrate the occasion.

nice. I found this the other night , and ive been reading it. I love it. You should keep a few males and experiment on them. See what im saying , just do whatever to them and see how it works out. Im gonna start my own grow journal soon. wish me luck?
