First Grow - PC Case!

ohsnapwnt,
i have a grow ging in a pc case too.
and im having the exact same thing happen with my lights.
my plants are father along than yours tho.
but twice the lights fell on them, and once the plants grew into the lights.
securing the lights with bolts sounds like a good idea.
i'm gonna be trying the same basic thing soon.
i burned a small bud site pretty badly.... which really sucks.
but thankfully the top bid sites were mostly untouched.
tho i did burn a ton of the foliage on one of my plants.

Ouch, that sucks. I'm tempting fate right now - I still have the lights on the side... on magnets... just a different, more structurally sound alignment and setup of magnets. I know I'm gonna wake up to lights on the plants again, and I'll be kicking myself in the ass when it happens.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by and consoling me with your horror stories of falling lights. If you do something to secure your lights, I'd like to see!

Just use zip ties!!!!!!!
I went ahead and drilled a hole above and below the power strip in 2 spots and put a zip tie through each set of holes - that might be enough on its own to hold the strip, but the zip ties coupled with the magnets is definitely enough to prevent any future mishaps! I had thought about using zip ties in this manner to begin with, but figured I'd want to move the lights around. But I can live with immobile lights and moving the plants down as they grow if it means the lights won't be falling anymore. And it saves me a few bucks since I don't have to go buy u-bolts. Thanks for the idea Illicht!

Hey merk, yeah my lights burnt the shit out of one and a little bit of the other. Sucks, but oh well. Power strip is much more secure now, shouldn't be any more of that.

Unfortunately in my current housing situation I can't really grow too much. I have to be somewhat stealthy about it. I have an armoire that when I move I will be shooting to convert into a grow box if I don't have a closet I can use.

oh alright now i know your situation but yea why didn't you just use a hot glue gun on your power strip i would send you my old pc case but in think that shit would cost too much, how big is your case height and width wise?

I can't speak for ohsnapwnt, but when i first set up my lights i did use hot glue. within 4 hours the lights had fallen on the pots. thankfully they had only just been planted, so they hadn't broken the surface.
maybe it will work if i used stronger hot glue and textured the surface i was gluing to. but i got my lights pretty darn secure now, so i thought id try that after i finished this grow.

also ohsnapwnt,
i'd love to see an updated pic on how the plants are doing after the burn.
mine recovered really quick, but they were also a lot father a long than your's were.

oh, i almost forgot,
did you have a plan on what to do when they start to smell?
mine are starting to smell a bit and i'm looking for ideas.
I got some ONA pro gel, but it smells so strongly of chemicals. i think people thought i was cooking meth or something.

i also got some carbon filter, but this filter was really only meant to filter water, so it not really working.

The whole idea to begin with was that I wanted lights that I could move. There was a post in the DIY section by someone who made a PC case and put a few really strong magnets (from old hard drives) onto his power strip, and he could stick it to the walls thru whatever reflective material he was using. After all that's happened, I wish I had done a better magnet configuration and zip ties earlier. But oh well. The dimensions of this case are actually pretty small. Like 16.5"x16.5"x7.75". A friend of mine has a computer case she no longer wants so I'll probably be getting that sooner or later and I may make another one and scrap this one - or I may make it and have one for vegging and one for flowering. Not sure yet. Just gonna stay focused on these 2 burnt babies for now!

I've got a few pics but my SD card reader is being a bitch, so I'll get them up here in a few. They're taking their sweet time to recover. Which I completely understand - the one that was only slightly burnt looks much better. The one that got burnt a lot, I'm pretty sure she's shocked like crazy considering about half of the foliage was burnt.

I haven't even begun to think about odor masking. It smells like weed in the house all the time, so I'll probably just wait until it starts to smell and assess the situation at that time. If the ONA products smell like chemicals I don't really want them.

i just got ona, and it does not smell like chemicals to me. it has a linen scent to the one I have. i think there is one which is scentless, but I cant speak for that.

Hey how are your plants doing now? I aswell am planning to build a pc grow case because I aswell am in the same situation that you are, any advice apart from doing a good job of glueing?
