I've been thinking about this idea off and on all day now and I really like it.

My husband's favourite hobby is woodworking but this fishing may be right up there also. He has a workshop filled with woodworking tools. Bandsaws, jigsaws, scrollsaws, miter saws, table saws etc etc and I know he would be really thrilled to make something like this himself so what I am going to do is try and find a pattern so he can make his own during the winter months when there is no fishing.

Great idea Godspeed . thanks again. (I rep'ed ya):mrgreen::blsmoke:
Thanks fdd. I wish I had one also. I think that is what my wife is getting me this year (keeping fingers crossed.)

they don't come cheap. he could make good money making them. i've seen nice custom made ones go for several hundred dollars.:hump:

LMAO!!! Pizzzh.:blsmoke:Funny. Yeah that is a great idea but a bit pricey right now. We are saving up our money to go out east next summer but that might be worth looking into for next Christmas.
Plus remember I already bought him an expensive fishing rod apparently.
plus then you get the day maybe weekend to yourself lol

hey Lacy...man you got lots of suggestions...how cool is that?...on the woodworking front....I remember how much I enjoyed working with a grinding wheel and chisels and carved bowls and other round shaped wooden things....it was really cool, and again...you get to create something as well.

You must be reading my mind fdd because that is what I was thinking about today. He really is a very good woodworker. Plus I could woodburn some design or something. He would really GET INTO this!!! He's made some really cute fishing lures from wood too but had to find the right wood.
We have some nice maple and cherry wood now that would look awesome.
Bass wood too soft.:-|

Fine idea. This is sooooo good.

i tie my own bass jigs. carved a few lures. fished with some antiques. all very productive. better than the store bought stuff.:blsmoke:

I KNOW!!! Shucks! I have guy friends!!! thanks guys!!!!

:clap::clap: My man LOVES working in his shop so this idea is the BOMB for sure.

Ok then he's a lot like you. He would totally enjoy this part of not only fishing but the creativity of making his own stuff. We're both like that.
Artsy fartsy kinda people. Hee! Hee!:blsmoke:

The gift card idea is good but I want to have gifts under the tree so I can see the look of surprize on his face.

And he's gonna be REAL surprized this year.

I would like to go fishing with him next year. He asked me to go last year but I laugh a lot so was scared I'd chase all the fish away.:lol::lol::wall:
get him a nice gift card to an outdoor shop (bass pro, cabelas. ect) so he can choose. then ask him to take you fishing just the two of ya, that should make him reel happy. I know i loved takin my girl fishin with me.

dont get one of those line spoolers there just a wast of money (put a pencil through the hole in the line package and hold it with resistance while he reels the line on)

did you eat all the marsh mellows?

He does fresh water fishing in small lakes and rivers. i'm not sure about the weights but I found a chabis (?) subscription magazine today.
I'll look through his fishing stuff and try and figure it out. I guess thats not too difficult. :? Little weights. right?

Thanks Bwinn
do you have extra line, bobbers for fresh water wieghts, lures, all that good stuff?

Oh brilliant!!!! Can I steal your idea and claim it as my own?

Thats good. He'd know that wasn't my idea. :-|

Thanks fdd.
i put an old stick in my cordless drill. then tie the end of the line you want to strip onto the stick. hit the trigger. strips my old line in about 45 seconds. when done just unchuck the stick.

Thanks truu. Yes that would make sense to me. He does need a good pair and it is always something he only thinks about the last minute.
Thats a good stocking stuffer that will surprise him.

I really like the fact that most of these ideas are affordable. He's gonna be so shocked!!!! (heehee):blsmoke:
To answer your question about fishing sunglasses Lacey, yes they are different. They are more polarized thank regular sunglasses, wich means they reflect more sunlight than regular sunglasses. While fishing, the sun beams down on the water and the reflection is more intense than regular sunlight. When i wear mine i can see clear into the water and i can usually see fish moving around. Its basicly like looking into water without sunlight reflecting back at you. Dont know what i would do without my sunglasses!

Ok you guys weren't kidding about the sharks. :?
My guy and I were watching this fishing show and these guys were catching big huge fish like that but they weren't sharks. i forget the name of the fish. It looked like it woul dhave been quite a challenge to catch.

looked like a "blue shark".

Oh I know its not just guys that like to fish but since this site is mostly men and they do most of the fishing I figured I just address them more specifically.

I have no regrets. these guys have been GREAT!!!

I'm gonna stay away from the waders right now because the good male friend that I do have, does fly fishing and if I bought him waders he would think I was trying to chum him up with my friend. (don't ask )

Thanks all the same for taking the time to reply. This has been most helpful.
Its not just guys that like to fish.

If he got himself his rod then maybe get an awesome reel. Look and see what kind of reels are in his arsonal of weapons. Spinning, bait casting, ect.

Does he like to freshwater or salt water fish? Thats kind of important.

I use Abu Garcia bait casting reels. The 5500 holds the worlds record for casting over the Astro Dome. These reels are beyond sweet.

You can also have his name put onto the rod with gold which adds a nice touch. =)

If he likes to freshwater fish, get him a pair of cool waders so he doesn't get cold and wet. Those are always appreciated.

Happy Holidays!!

Thanks cearid.
The fishing radar is out because we don't even have a boat.
A boat is out of the question because I just can't afford it.

I would love to buy him a boat. Can you imagine????:hump:

Oh he would flippp!!!!

Stuff to make lures like feathers and stuff are good ideas. I'm staying away from the fly fishing right now. It doesn't sit right with this family right now. (heehee)

Thanks again. He will eventually need some waiter(sp) haha food servers. Umm weighters...you know what i mean. :-|
Hey Lacy,
I didn't read the whole thread so I dont know if his birthday is past or not but heres my advice:
If your intent on a fish finder then try "Furuno" (i think thats how its spelled) they make all sorts of radar and gadgets for commercial and sports fisherman.

take a look at his books and see if he's got any fly tying books, if so maybe a fly tying kit; comes with a clamp that probably mounts to a table, but I've seen portabe ones for taking on the road, and a spooler, and maybe some thread and feathers and stuff. There really cool if your into that kind of stuff. A good fly tying book if he doesnt have one would maybe help (helped me anyway :)).

Another thing that he might like, but probably already has, is a good set of hip waiders. They are basically like the bottom part of a scuba suit. Lets him go out farther and stuff.

Hope these help :joint:

I can't believe I only just noticed your avatar.

Thats how I looked the only day on my 'puter.

Hahaha!
hmm yeah it might be hard to buy him stuff as it's usually preference as to what lures etc he prefers.. you could always buy him a cool tacklebox and fill it with an assortment of goodies.. I know he must have one but usually guys will have a few... so maybe goto the fishing shop, pick out a cool tacklebox and tell the store guy that you want lures, sinkers etc for fishing on dams or tell him specifically what he is fishing for ie bass, catfish..if thats what he fishes for. Then he will get a nice tacklebox with cool little goodies inside when he opens it...I know I would enjoy that
