In the last election, practically all campaign resources and campaigning went to 8 states. Neither Trump or Clinton spent time campaigning in small states. Any chance to affect public policy or get heard by one of the candidates was obliterated by the EC and its tendency to give battleground states a larger voice and attention from candidates.
Also, the EC was never about protecting smaller states from larger ones. It was a compromise made in the 12th amendment that gave slave states extra EC votes.
The only thing Congress managed to pass last year was a tax break for the wealthy. How many of those do you think live in the hinterlands? Nope, the don't. Most live on the east and west coasts with a sprinkling of oil wealth in Texas.
