germination question

And if it doesn't appear then guess what? It didn't germ and you can reuse the puck. Waste your time - who gives a shit? You newbies who don't like it the hard way would be advised to plant directly into the medium and wait. Like real farmers.
So putting a seed in a cup of water and a paper towel is the hard way? and if we dont were not real farmers? Why dont you grow the fuck up and stop talking shit..Have some fucking respect for other people... ppl like you dont belong in this site. Nobody wants to hear your crying.

Remember to keep the roots covered, but allow light to touch the exposed seedlings head. I usually just sprinkle dry medium so it still covers the seed. Now as far as seed germination goes, I personally prefer pre-wetting the seed starting medium and only soaking the seed for five minutes. I've seen many instances were soaking for extended periods leads to the seed rotting. A short soaking though does seem to help. If the seed has been in storage for over a year then as a precaution I'll add rooting hormone to the water as well.

hmm... water and paper towel thing always worked for me...

placeing the paper towel on a heating mat also helps...

To say this is not the way "farmers do it", is absurd... I can distinctly remember being Taught this way in Elementary School... (yucky Lima beans...lol)... you can also youtube a lot of greenhouse video's and see them doing this method...

the attitude doesn't help either...

A couple questions for those of you who seed directly into medium. Is it ok to use say. a Solo cup with light warrior? And would a typical home heating pad placed underneath work? Thanks in advance.

Typical home heating pads turn off automatically after a few hours... I just stuck a seed in a wet paper towel. Will go into medium or rapid rooter tomorrow. I'd appreciate if someone would give me an idea of how moist to make rapid rooter if I go that route. This plant is gonna be a mommy and I was planning on using the rapid rooters for her little clone babies. Nice thoughts. paz!

what about a dj short $30 blueberry seed that swole up but hasnt popped even tho bubble cheese and tutenkhamon(planted same time) are on day 2 of sprout status. I splashed it with 100ppm of general organics bioroot 1-1-1, just hope for the best now or anyone gotta trick cuz I dont wanna lose out on that 30 bones, even if its male its good pollen imo

Not sure about Light Warrior, as long as it was real low in nutes it should be OK. I always started in starter mix, or a potting soil with no nutes added.

As far as the solo cups I have used them 2 ways and they both work well for me.

My favorite is to find round peat put that fits nicely into a solo cup and plant in the peat pot. Solo cup keeps it moister longer, and zero chance of transplant damage.

I've also planted in a clear plastic solo, then put it inside a red or blue one. Supposedly light on the roots is not good. Was never sure but kept them in a solid color cup anyway. The cool thing about this is you can slide the clear cup out and watch the development of the root system. You don't want to let them get rootbound, but you want sufficient roots to hold everything together when you remove it from the cup.

Always punch holes in the bottom. I get a stack of about 8 and get a philllips screwdriver real hot on a gas stove or propane torch, then melt half a dozen holes in all 8 at once, works slick.

Has anyone every seeded directly into hydroton?
I'm curious, how do you propose to stick a seed the size of a grain of rice in the middle of some clay balls and expect it not to fall through the medium. Not criticizing, just truly Curious.

(yes I know this is an older thread)

What temperature do you set your heat mat at? I have mine setup in my new rig running on a thermastat plug in switch with the temperature prob in a starter pot, in the soil. Wondering what temperature would be optimal for the soil during germination and start of a seed in a soil grow?

i use sunbeam home heat mats, have for years for peppers and tomatoes and zinnias and more..... you need the one with 3 heat settings, set to low if your room is warmish and med if it's chilly. cheap and they work fine. place some flyers or other paper 6-8 sheets under the pad to protect your surface and one between your heat mat and tray. i water my media, place the seed and moisten with a mister again, then cover with barely moist media. into a dome and bam very quickly. also, if you can find coconut coir pots they're the shit. peat pots can grow mold on em and the peat pot can hold too much moisture or wick moisture out of the soil, and roots go through coir much easier. in a pinch unwaxed paper dixie cups poked full or holes up the sides and on the bottom work too.
