go ahead and laugh-400w hps closet vent

Everyone who uses hid lights in a closet has to be creative unless they can cut holes and exhaust to an attic. I can't do that. I don't give a shit what it looks like, it moves air over the damn bulb and out of the closet. I used a vornado 8 inch desk fan and rigged it to blow through my reflector. I find these fans both quieter and cheaper than inline fans, even on high. I rigged the exhaust ducting to blow out of the top part of the closet door. I will be leaving the door open 4 inches with another fan blowing out the closet toward the crack to exhaust the actual room air. The closet is in a spare room that i can keep dark during flower so light leaks are not an issue, and leaving the door open a bit not only lets the heat out but lets the fresh air in. In the pics you can see the babies under the t5/cfl. Tomorrow the ghetto lights go and the rest of veg will be done with the hps, and then flower, while I veg up new bitches for next batch in my veg cab coming soon. it was a real bitch to rig the fan up with the grow already going but now it's done. So did i do good or am i still a moron? Really I'm just a miser but I have a good feeling about this. pic 4 is my favorite. i used venetian blind cord, a pully, a plastic cable tie, and 2 hooks. total cost for vent setup: $35

No comments? fyi I fired up the light today. It's been on for 13 hrs now with the fan on medium and my temps are 78 degrees! I only have the door open about 2 inches also. I repotted my plants to give them space to take off (notice i propped my shelf up with books for extra support ). To be fair the temp outside today was only in the 50s so when it gets hot out will be the true test. i can always flip the fan to high. i can put my hand about 4 inches under the glass and its just starting to get hot there. it was WAY HOTTER in there with the damn cfls and t5s! i'm friggin floored and my light meter reads off the chart until about 20 inches down. this setup works.

lol. a lot of people are big on inline fans and using them to pull air rather than push it. also if you look at the pic of the fan it looks like a drunk hung it. i assure you i was sober and the sheer hell of being in that closet with the plants and cfls and fan and wires by myself in the 90 degree heat was a hell that cannot be described. but quite a gust comes out of that exhaust and the temps would easily hit 90 on a 75 degree day with the floro setup. the whole time i was afraid to get an hid light because of the heat and here i find out that an air cooled reflector is truly a magic thing.

ya thats not bad, i used to grow out of a cardboard box with a few CFLs, LOL gotta make use with what you got

ive grown in a set up like that for a few rounds. mine was in basement so was pretty cool in summer. just need dehumidifyer. got lots of bud with that set up

its only been 5 days and these little shits took off. just wanted to report that the temps hit 72 outside yesterday and temps in my closet peaked at 80 around 3 pm with the door only open an inch. easy solve is crack the door bigger lol. temps went back down to 78 in 15 min. i dont even have a plant fan in there yet, just the light fan. Next worry is going to be the humidity but the light puts off such a dry heat i'm thinking I won't have an issue. the closet is not that big. these pics are actually from yesterday. i fimmed all 3 days ago but the pics dont show the new growth.

so you said that air cooled reflectors are a magical thing...do they make that big of differnce?? i have a regular fan propped up on a shelf about 2feets above my lights. im only usin 5 100w CFLs right now but im expecting my 600w MH/HPS light 2morrow. the 600w im expecting does not have a air cooled reflector..the fan i do have is blowing straight up and theres an access panel going into the attic about 18inches above it that i opened it. so the air is able to blow straight up into the attic. im also waiting on my LED temp/humidity meters so right now i dont kno how much of a difference the fan has. from your own opinion do you think my fan is doin the job?? it has to atleast be making a differnce.

You coulda spent $20 and got a hollow-core door to hang and ran the ventilation through that out a window or into a nearby bathroom vent. If you run an intake at floor level you'll get cooler air so you won't need to use that crack to blow air in with that fan which I'm sure takes up a lot of floor space.

the point was to update whether or not the setup efficiantly cooled the space when higher outside temps were involved versus the low temps when i fired up the light, and what i did to correct it. The idea is to try to solve closet heat issues when cutting the walls or swapping the door are not options. the plant info was to rectify the fact that i claimed the plants took off but they looked almost the same size, so i included the bit about cutting the plants. i more meant laugh at the setup but thank you anyway i guess.
