Also some times the person doesn't have enough clout to give you any rep so it will just be a gray square without a plus or minus sign. In cases like that it's just a wash, you don't win or lose. I understand why, it's too easy to game the system otherwise. But it could also lead people to not helping out new users because they can't give them rep.
