I'm trying it, you'll definately either want cfl's or a different spectrum HID. hps has a spectrum usable by cannabis in veg stage but it's not the best, cfl are cheaper and more growth could come of it.

Iv'e heard people growing with hps all the way through, but not sure if its as good as HM, or T5/CFL or even what the outcome is. Its because the light emitting off of MH, T5 and CFL lights is simular to the light during summer. And as the days get shorter (12/12) you switch to HPS lights, or soft white CFL. All your trying to do is mimic the outdoors. Anyway, i think you should try 12/12 from seed with the HPS. You would get pretty low yield, but quicker results. Hope i could help.

I have a 600w HPS blue hort, so I have a bit more blue supposedly. Plants are in last week of flower now. Same bulb the whole way. Works great. It so much easier (for me) and I have the fluoros on the shelf now.

My goal is to get a 1000w digital ballast that can handle either HPS or MH. At that point I will be Ushio bulbs. Standard HPS and MH. I don't have separate rooms so veg and flower are in the same room so just changing a bulb to go from veg to flower would be super convenient

You would need bundles of cfls to even match a Hps even in the vegging stage. Everyone uses HIDs for a reason, NOTHING COMES CLOSE!

hmm.

mh grows fine plants in veg, but, in flowering, it grows more leaves than buds.. (they grow more similar to outdoors, but less budsize cause not enough yellow and red, actually indoors grows have comparatively larger buds than outdoors (just alot smaller plants))

but, ive found that adding 3-23 watt 6500k bulbs.

seems to add more flavor and trichomes, but i dont think id go much more than 5 -23w cfls adding to my 600w hps.

oh yes, there is also some blue in my hps bulb (more whiter light than normally with hps)

works good in veg too..

so yes, i do think extra blue is helpful, its just that i dont think we need that much of it.

Hands down, HPS will give you great results if used during all
stages of growth. The key is height ratio during different stages.
