Growing close to the ocean

This is my grow journal, I've got a spot down 500-600m off of the ocean, and I was wondering if the salt water air would affect growing conditions.

I'm moving them to the spot after they're a foot tall, so stress won't be a big factor but will the salt in the air fuck with the soil.

I'll start my grow journal soon. Wish me luck =D, first batch of seeds, 9/10 sprouted =D.

It should be fine but your gonna have more chance of getting powdery mildew or moldy buds.

yh was thinking about that, I don't know if there's any ways around that risk of mildew, it's surrounded by a giant pine forest also.

pine trees usually cause acidic soil so you would want to throw down some dolomite lime on the ground when you plant. and yea i grow pretty damn close to ocean too but 1st time

looks good so far. just keep an eye on them mostly during flowering.

what strain is it?? i live close to the beach and know someone who has a small vineyard close to the beach....the grapes get a little salty when he harvests becasue of the salt in the air...but you smoke buds mainly so i dont think thats an issue haha. i also just remembered a guy i know who grew some og kush at his house by the beach last season. he didnt have any problems with mold or mildew, but his buds were fluffy as fuck. i dont kno if that was the climate or just not kush

KK, then i'm not that worried, i have some 100% sativa weed =D durban poison or something. It isn't that humid up here, do u think putting plastic over top of it would decrease humidity nad act as a rain guard. Also, is thc water soluble, or will it be destroyed if it is rained on?

no THC isnt water soluble, however i dont think the plastic is necessary, i dont know what u have thought out, but im thinking plastic will hold in the moisture and with heat and light, that will deff. cause mold. but if u can allow proper air flow it should be good. a sativa shouldnt be a problem...let it veg for a while and see how it does when it begins to flower

I'm pretty close to the ocean too. Only issue is fog + humidity.

Get a large bottle of neem and start spraying BEFORE the powder mildew shows up. Keep on top of that because it will come and won't want to leave!

Neem oil is good, but look into getting a real fungicide, i have conveniently forgotten the name of the kind i use. Moisture will be a problem, but completely covering your plants will lock in more moisture than it will keep out, but if you buy a canopy to put over your plants to guard them from rain that is fine. I use 8x8 or 10x10 canopies, the kind that unfold. They run around 100 bucks but well worth it due to their stability.

These are pics of my plants 4 days after i planted the seeds. 9/10 sprouted but 2 look kind of frail, at this age should i let the lid of my mini green house down so the plants get some wind on them to thicken stems?
Also planted 1 other seed of some diff strain i forget which one it's either purple kush, blueberry, or white rhino.

Neem oil is an organic fungicide/pesticide.

You should be able to find it at most hardware/garden stores or any hydro store. Start spraying as a preventative measure BEFORE powder mildew shows up.

If you still get a powder mildew problem a non-organic fungicide may be necessary. It's very important to keep on top of this because once it shows up it is very very difficult/almost impossible to stop.

Living close to the ocean you are almost certain to come across this mildew if you don't take action against it. A tarp will not help because it's a fog/humidity issue.

yh mildew isn't that big of a deal i'll just watch it closely, atm my plants r sitting in this mini green house box to protect it from the elements, when do u think i should start letting them be exposed to the elements?
and should i leave them exposed just to wind to strengthen their stems on nice days , and protect them from rain for as long as possible?
or should i let them get rained on? I water them with rain water i collect, I prefer controlling the watering schedule for as long as possible

Well I guess that depends on how extreme the elements are around you. I'm in Northern Cali so it was kind of an easy process for me. I just keep everything protected for a few days in the shade then waited for a foggy day and put them all right out there.

Didn't have any problems doing that. All my seedlings lived and are now pretty strong.

You should be more worried about direct sun at first then rain. If you're getting a lot of direct sun you might want to be cautious hardening them off. Starting with a few hours per day of direct sun, then slowing increasing that. But if you've got fog that works perfect.

I wouldn't worry about rain until they are flowering. Unless you're getting strong winds I wouldn't worry about that too much either. I'd be more worried about what potentially the wind could blow onto the plants than harmful effects of wind blowing on the plants themselves.

Just look around your area and remove things that could potentially blow onto your plants and damage them.

As far as when, I'd say as soon as they start getting their 3rd set of leaves you should start the hardening off process.

well atm they get like 7-9 hours of direct sunlight, i'm in southern bc. The rain is pretty hard, so thats what i'm worried bout, during flowering doesn't matter bout rain cause the resin will bead the water so thc will be fine, otherwise after their 3rd set of leaves i'll harden thx for the advice

It's climate dependent.

If your plants are already getting 7-9 hours of direct sun and liking it then you're all good, don't worry about it.

A lot of people I know in SoCal take up to 3 weeks to harden off. They start with 3 hours a day direct sun first week, second week 4 hours, third week 5-6, and then full sun.

Since where I live I generally don't get that much sun I don't do that. I just put them under a tree and wait for a few foggy/cloudy days and put them out. Where I live I get fog all morning usually so it's pretty easy. Had 100% success with that this year with my seedlings and 98% overall.

The thc might be fine, but you can easily get bud rot, mildew, mold, etc.

TBH I've never been to BC and any rain I get here is probably mild in comparison, so I don't know. Someone else should probably answer that.

I did have seedlings out during one bad windstorm and they didn't seem to mind at all. A few of them didn't appreciate tree branches falling on them but they all lived!

But as I say, I live in Cali, so wtf do I know about weather.
