Hanging/curing in the dark

I've read a lot about how you're supposed to hang and cure your harvested goods in the dark...what purpose does this serve? Is it completely necessary?

wont the thc breakdown once its finished curing anyway because it will then be exposed to light?

There's treachery afoot
Chemically yes, but everything I have read here and other sources states that light can reduce the thc content, especially direct light. There is some conversion during curing but I think curing is more designed to remove excess chlorophyll and does not reduce thc content.

I don't know the whole thing just doesn't make much sense to me...how is THC degraded with light when you need light to grow the plant in the first place...? Is there a certain point when the plant doesn't need the light and THAT'S when it starts to degrade? Any experts here?

flowergurl answered your question pretty good. Curing done correctly will enhance flavour, and texture. Curing is not necessary if you perfer the natural minty flavour of the plant. Until the plant fully dries some of the sugar production is halted, so the plant will break down stored starch to make simple sugars which are used for food. which will give the plant a better flavour in my opinion. At the same time this happens chlorophyl is broken down. which is where the leaves will begin to lose there green color. Drying is something of the same thing in the process you are describing as long as the room remains dark and well ventilated after chlorophyl breakdown. I believe that the sun or light will degrade thc by raising temps in the drying/curing process. better to have a cool humid well ventilated room. the slower the cure and drying for that matter the smoother the weed will be when inhaled. Fastly dried weed will retain a harsh hit with a minty taste. I believe it has something to do with the oils in the plant not drying all the way or something i dont recall.
