ya im doing the same thing but with a window a/c. dont forget that the stand alone ones do need a exhaust tube. but you could just hook it up to your stinky air exhaust. what im trying to figure out is how freakin cold am i ganna have to keep my room to maintain a good temp inside my grow box...

Next time listen to the old man that says T-5 Lighting is simply better for a closet grow.
those plants look very nice, how old are they?

i was going to with CFLs but decided on the hps because of all the people that said how much better the bud production is. i didnt ralize even the 400 watters pump out that much heat and my learning experience continues

Hey if you want to save your money and not invest to much more. Get a larger exhust fan.. maybe you can draw some freash air in some how 2? And make sure you have your air out, higher up then were your plants are, and freash air in down there. Your exhust fan is enough for your air exhcange already but having a hgher CFM will also bring more air into your grow room :)(it will pull from all cracks and stuff) good luck.., Maybe leave the door open a little bit. Just a small amount, you add all the crack's openings, thats up and down your door, u got a pritty nice sized hole. Good luck

It's not going to help you to have one fan intake and one exhaust. Make them both exhaust and leave holes for intake. The exhaust fans will make the two holes passive intake vents.

That probably won't be enough, but at least you'll be able to go out and have a cooler room all together.

Also, don't forget an oscillating fan. If you point it so part of its swing cycle makes air hit the bulb, it should drop the temperature dramatically. Plus it helps build plant strength and prevent stagnant air (bad things in that that you don't want).

And if all that doesn't work, maybe you could try running your set-up at night and during the early and late day as to avoid the hot part of the day?

One more thing, close your heating vents in your room, the box should heat it up enough anyway.

i think i'm just gona see wich i can do cheaper
put in better intake and exhaust or install a cool tube
but i think i'm leanin towards the cool tube.
If you can, do both. Get the cooltube and have upgraded intake and exhaust. The intake and exhaust doesn't have to break your bank, just think about what the goal is, then implement it as your budget allows.

There are plenty of do it yourself guides. I don't know how handy your are, but you could make your own cooltube, or if you have a dremmel, you could modify your current reflector hood to allow it to be air cooled buy just buying a $7 flange to hook up to 4" flex ducting, and if your a frugal shopper, you could find deals on Dayton blowers and such, for as little as $29

Dayton4C566ATWO SPEED BLOWER 480/375 CFM 115VAC 3.55 AMPS $29.78 used or new system pulls

Heres some decent deals on new ones

Lots of people here willing to help you rectify your heat issues, took me a while to perfect my ventilation for my personal medical grow needs, but think about what you want to accomplish, then research the costs, then put the fix into place as cheap as your budget allows. Better to do it right the first time, than to have to keep upgrading what you have, if you do it right the first time, it will cost you less in the long run.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll get your heat issue rectified. :-P

my space is about 5'L x 3'6" W x 7' h. had the same problem when i started. this is what i did. fans fans more fans and then just one more for the hell of it.
my temp now is 65f - 70f lights off. 74F - 78f on. before it hit 110. its a 1000w hps

first thing was the hood $110 light.jpg a lot like the one someone posted before. i bought a 6" inline duct fan $25 from lowes inlinefan.jpg there is a dryer vent running from hood out the room to the inline fan like this vent.jpg now take note that these inline fans only produce the CFM stated on box if its a straight vent. the flex vent restrict air flow. that was not enough for me because its a 1000w. so i bought a $3 fan and did this fan4.jpg now in the summer i will replace the fan with a vent connected straight to the ac duct 1' away. then i found this really cool fan that has a thermostat on it. fan3.jpg i placed it in the wall at floor level. (i built the wall so it was easy) and then i added these fans auxfan1.jpgfan2.jpg

this is probably the first thing i would do i move the ballast out side of the room.ballast.jpg

hope this helps. i spent way to much time killing plants to figure this out and not share it with someone. also if your room is smaller then you can do it on a smaller scale. they have a 4" inline fan was like $12. watch out which hood you buy. pay attention cause some of them dont come with the glass, which IMHO is a rip off.

my flower room is only 4' by 4'... with the door closed my 400 hps bulb can bring it up 10 degrees in about an hour and a half

BTW, having an air in is ALWAYS a great IDea, takes lots of stress off fans.. Also u can regulate your airflow better, thas if you are dealing with a little bigger of a set up though.. But for my veg room, I always pound in freash air and have an exhaust fan..But thats because if im gonna get shit done, tis gonna be done right!!!

here's what i have learned about ventilation. if at all possible, make your grow box air tight. this greatly increases your exhaust flow as well as bring in a lot more fresh air. which ultimately means less / smaller fans.
When i built mine, I cyliconed everything before it was nailed down. then on the door i put a rubber door strip. then i close it very tightly with two dead bolt type latches.
btw the box i tested this with is about 3x3x5 using a 400w hps and 3 muffin fans. one of which blew cool air into the light and back out the side.
just keep the room around 72.

oh yea, and drilling a 4" hole on both sides of your old school hood works just as good as one you would pay for. the cool tube is probably better though. but you could build one of those pretty easily too.

Well... I'm new to indoor gardening..... so my help will be basic at best.

Based on my trial runs..... I'm going to have the same problem with heat.... ...I'm not going to bother with trying to build something on my own... I'm going to buy one of those $300.00 A/C units that stand alone. (They DON'T go in a window... they are just stand alone). I realize it's going to take a lot of power to run.... but I'm reducing power everywhere else in my home where I can.

WalMart carries these A/C for $250 to $350 depending on the size you want.

I know others here have some good plans for DIY room coolers... so maybe one of those would be better for you.

How many BTU is this A/C from WalMart Ms. Florida?:hump: LOV yAh THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP !!!!!!
