If you are watering every couple of days then the roots are probably continually wet and that is causing your issue. You need to soak the entire pot. Put them in some catch trays. Water slowly, start with half a gallon. Sometimes I gotta stir up the top soil to help absorption....it may take about 30min but water slowly from the top, then pour some in the catch tray so it can soak it up from the bottom. Keep dumping what collects in the catch pan back into the top.
It may take about 20-30 for the soil to absorb most of that half gallon but eventually it will. After 45min, anything left in the catch tray can be discarded. At this point pick your pot up and take note of how heavy it feels when fully saturated. Don't water again until it feels very light in comparison. Could take about a week or so....then repeat the saturating process.
