the two pc fans i use are ac power, 4.25 in x 4.25 in, and LOUD. they work great, i just dont need them to work thattt great. its a 2.5 by 3 by 3.5 foot growbox, and im using cfls, so the temps shouldnt be getting too high, but it is hard to keep them down without the fan always being on - in which case its loud as SHIT :o

can anyone please tell me a good fan speed adjuster that they USE or USED - i got the Speedster fan adjuster, and it is either just barreelllyyyyy slower and quieter, or if you bring it into the supposed medium range the fans stop from lack of power - the high range only gives one speed too

anywho, +rep to anyone and everyone who gives helpful advice or recommendations - thanks everybody

Hey sorry bro, this may not be alot of help, but I have the same problem..... And you know the best advice I can give?... If your gonna keep growin, you just gotta deal!.. That or spend MORE money on BETTER fan's... The way I see it, those are your only 2 options. Sorry I couldn't be of any further assistance...

I'll promise you this, my rooms are probably MUCH louder than yours are/is! hahaha, How many CFL's, and what watts and spec are you runnin?

if the speed adjuster you have right now cuts off power after being on too low of a setting. others would probably do the same.

i would just try to get a different fan.

haha i like the name man, clever
i have two seedlings in it, so more lights to come later (probly just two, maybe a side light as well. for the time being, i have a 23 watt 2700k red spec cfl and a 27 watt 5500k blue spec.
i just cant stand this cus im obviously trying to be discreet but u can hear my cabinet outside my room in the living room unless the door is closed or music is on- i already have the fans installed and can't take them out to switch them i dont think, but money isnt that much of a problem so any solutions anyone has are much appreciated

therein lies the problem, i added a back onto my cabinet to elongate it, and the fans are stuck in the wall of my case between the cabinet and back section - doubt theyre comin out
anyone know of a timer that'll do intervals, i could stand having them just go in 15 minute intervals
thanks

Wire the red n the black wires from the fan/s to a house dimmer switch this will work as a speed controller, or you can use a 3 to 12 volt transformer Ive done this and run both my cpu fans at 3.5 volts and when needed ajust the voltage knob for more speed hope this helps - STELTHY :)

How warm does it get with the fan off? get a thermo and tests temps.. i dont see a couple of cfl's getting hot enough to matter.

it would just suck to buy a different/more expensive control switch, and have it not work. seems like its more of a prob with the fan itself.

haha i just read your last post. having them on intervals would for sure be the best idea.

paragon electronics makes interval timers.

Do you have a better pic of the whole set up so I can kinda get a better idea of waht your working with?
And are the fan's PUSHING or PULLING air INTO the room? Or are they Pushing or PULLING air OUT of the room?

EDIT: Sorry, just saw that you only have 2 lights in a roughly 26 CuFt area... Honestly your temps shouldn't even be a problems with that! Do you have a thermometer? Because your gonna need one, they're only like 5 bucks for a digi thermy at wally world... I have 8 lights in a roughly 5 CuFt area, now THAT causes some heat issues, hence why I have BIG fans which makes the loudness.

Just an FYI, you are going to need more light eventually, if you plan on growing something that'll smoke anyways.

thanks, but i doubt thatll work any better than a fan speed adjuster

it gets up to 78/79ish, but i havent let it get hotter, although it might go up a couple more degrees if i let it - i really dont see how, my room is only like 71

yea i have the other lights to add in, just dont need em yet - some of the inside is lined with mylar, maybe thats doing more than i think to insulate?

do a search for paragon electronic timers. im not sure how much they are.
will do, thakns

here's some pics of the setup -
WARNING - its a ghettoHippie heaven in there, reflectors and moveable shelf, all for a grand total of the price of a handsaw and a night of drinking (natty light cans)- oh and cardboard to direct the fans and enclose them to hide light

forgot to answer this, theres one fan pulling air in about a foot up, and another pushing it out at the top and opposite side

Did you try just using one fan most grow boxs have some sort of hole here and there so it will still suck in from the little holes around try it and check temps but i use cfls and no fan at all but i use 6500K only i was told its a better spectrem for seedling and veg if im wrong someone correct me please my set up is in my grow journal.

Edit: LOVE the use of the beer cans as a reflector!!! And put the light around 2 inches away from the plant the farther awat the less lumens it gets from the bulbs

Ok cool, wasn't trying to say you don't know how to grow or anything. Just making sure, sounds like you've got it covered.

78/79 degrees is absolutely fine. Is that with the fan's running? BOTH my rooms run at 82 F. sometimes get up to 84 but no higher.

no 6500k is great, i have a 43 watt 6500k, but its too big n hot for this point in the grow (early) - you might want to mix spectrums though, im using blue spec as my main light with some red (2700k) for internode growth-ive heard good things

Since you have a very um basic looking setup, try this.. this is how I quietend my 1st STEALTH kitchen cupboard grow, Seal a pvc cake mix bowl, or simerlar over both of the fans from the outside with a bathroom sealant you can screw it in place for stability, then melt/cut/drill a hole in the center of each making sure the hole is the right size to comfortably fit a washing machine drain hose to them, put a normal sports sock over the end of your exhaling fans drain hose, and tape it on. then hide it behind your unit, with a drain hose attached in the same way to you inhaling fan but with a piece of net curtain taped over the end of the pipe to stop dust/bugs etc from entering your growroom, you can either extend the pipe so its away from you either in another room, in a boarded up chimney or to an air vent, the 2 outside options give you grade A fresh air and since they suck air in and do not exhale, on cold days there will be no steam outside of the vent/chimney, and if you just extend the pipe to another cupboard or room etc you will achieve much much QUIETER noise whilst the fans are running, if this seems like to much hassle, lol, I did this and it worked awesome since my wife n I sleep in the same room hardly anything can be heard. BUT if this is to much hassle, try just using one exhaling fan and just allow that fan to pull air in from your other un-plugged fan port, if your cupboard is sealed well so no light leaks are visable in the dark the negative vacuum the sucking fan creates should be enough to slowly turn your inhaling fan anyhow :) you could just use smaller cpu fans and use a hacked phone charger to run them, or you can wait till i find the name of a fan speed controller i used ages ago! the dimmer switch works in the same way...exactly the same way so in slowing your fans it also decreases the noise of them too, hope this helps more :) - STELTHY:leaf:

do you have any pics of that setup, its kinda confusing - i know that this doesnt sound right, and i may not be, but i don't really think its any louder to have just the one than both, theyre wired together after all
and i tried the phone charger thing, but they weren't powerful enough to start the fans

I think I counted a total of 2 periods after he says "try this"

Lol, no offense stealthy, but WHAT THE FUCK are you tryin to say here??? hahaha, I have aboslutely NO CLUE what you are talking about! I am interested in trying it, it sounds like it may be a good idea an d could work to quiet down my fans. But I need to know what your actually talking about to try it. lol ;-)
