Help seedling first leaves just not separating

Hi everyone I'm first time grower I germinated my seed in just tap water in a heated propagator and cover so was dark for 24 hours then she cracked and sprouted a taproot very small then I put her in paper towel in a food bag back in propagator for another 24 hours covered still she sprouted about a 1/4 inch taproot then I put her in just shy of a pint plastic cup with holes in bottom and filled the cup with biobizz lightmix didn't flush with water just sprayed lightmix with plain room temp tap water put a food bag over the cup and put her in the heated propagator under my 300w duel spectrum cfl took about 3-4 days to sprout then she just stuck with her leaves like what's on pic stuck up not separating and I've checked her over no seed she'll or skin remainder now she's been stuck like this for 2-3 days please can someone help thank you

Thanks that was my last seed at the min others did nothing I'm gonna have get my order on again anyone else any ideas

Other than over complicating the entire process I don't see a problem. Cotyledons can stay stuck together for a while especially when the seedling is putting down it's tap root. No need to open and start photosynthesis if you have no root system to support growth. Keep it under light and they will eventually open up. Also keep in mind there is thin almost transparent membrane that protects the ungerminated seedling while in the shell. Sometimes this keeps the cotyledons wrapped up tight for a while after sprouting.. No need to worry.

Mate if you have 10 or 100 or 1000+ seeds to germinate

Then you fuck around with a tray paper and spraying stuff

If you have a few beans just put them right into coco, soil, rockwall or anything like that

People see these methods and think they sound like the right thing to do, most people who germ in paper or water or tubs do it because it would take days to set up a pot for every seed there doing as them methods are for testing germination rates and also saving you money on pots and such when your doing loads, also you can pick out the best ones and just grow them easier

So unless your starting 100 to pick the best 10 that pop why do people do it with paper towels and such ?

So I just put ungerminated seeds straight in the soil and spray with water 2 times a day under my 300w cfl ? And should I use any format off humidity dome?

you don`t need any light till after they pop if your humidity is correct, covering the pot stops the top soil going dry too fast

use a wetting agent or some kinda "plant start" feed helps the seed get wetted faster they normally pop better and faster with a wetting agent

Gonna try get hold of some rapid start do you reken that if I raised the light it would help she only sprouted when I had the light about 3 feet she's done nothing since and the soil seemed to me that it stayed more moist warm

I'm a new grower and just used a wet cloth for my 5 seeds, all of which popped fine. From my point of view it's easier to be able to physically see how the seed is doing. Another thing for us new growers is this is all a new learning experience for us, so we want to see that kind of thing whether it's necessary or not. That may change as time goes on and we realise it's going to happen just the same when we pot the seeds into correct medium and conditions.

Have to agree that OP seems to have way over complicated it though.

Your more likely to get root damage or some kind of shock using paper towels it`s really only good as a way of saving space or hiding what your doing but it does work


There`s a product called root2gel its a clear gel you can clone a plant in or start a seed in you can see everything that`s going on if you have it in a clear tub, but plant roots like it to be dark, magic soil can work too

Just put 1000 seeds in a bottle of magic soil and pull them out as they pop


Just my 2 pence but if a seed is so expensive/rare your just doing one its worth giving it more space to start out in

I mean even the fem`d seeds I`ve paid 20 to 50p for I treat like the £10 each seeds give them there own little pot and such, when I get to know the strain I narrow down if I`m starting them in cups, cubes or 2 to 5L pots hell autos I`ll start in 15L or more saves messing around with them

I agree. When I started it was nice to see the seeds germinate. It was information. When I put them in the soil, if they didn't sprout I would have known the soil was the problem. If I didn't germinate outside the soil, I wouldn't know if I had bad seeds or bad soil.

I did paper towel once. Then I started soaking my seeds in 1% hydrogen peroxide because I didn't like how the paper towel method. I still soak, but just 6-12 hours and then put them in Rapid Rooters (upsidedown, with my own hole poked in it because the pre-drilled hole is for clones and seems to large).

I've been using a dish cloth lol obviously a new one though not the one out of my sink bowl.

I'll defiantly try other ways when I've got more experience for learning purposes though.

On your next batch of seeds just plant them directly in a cup of pre watered soil. Just drop them on top of the soil and gently push them in about a 1/4 inch deep an brush some soil over the hole. Put cups under your CFLs about 4-6 inches away and be patient. In 3 to 5 days you will have sprouts. Resist the urge to water. Damping off is one of the biggest killers of beans.

The tap root you can see with your eyes is covered in microscopic hairs.which will eventually become roots. When you remove them from the paper towel/dish cloth you damage them. Just setting your sprouts back.

Not disagreeing but if it sets it back so much why does pretty much everyone else seem to use this method? I can see how it would damage the tap root slightly with the friction but it surely can't be that bad?

By pressing watered do you mean put water on soil mix so all soil is wet then water till tidy bit of runoff

You would be surprised now damage it causes. Those little hair are attached to the paper towel/dish cloth are torn/damaged when the sprout is removed. My guess is most just do not know better. The follow cannabis forum methods. Not tried and true horticultural methods.

Fill your cup with medium and then water it well, until runoff. Then plant the bean. you can cover the cups for the first day or so to keep the medium moist. Plastic wrap works well, with a hole or two punched in it. Soon as you see them pushing through the soil remove it for sure and watch nature take its course.

People seem to be getting good yields still. Even the same or better than people what have potted from seed?

I might pot 2 (out of 4) seeds directly into soil on my next grow and see the difference.
