Hi Guys,
Been noticing a LOT of bitching about seed-bank a to z, and usually it's a herm issue. Most of the guys bitched about, like Cali Connection or Barney's Farm are excellent breeders who's gear has been grown out with huge success all over the world. So does the fact that their fem stock hermies reflect on the seedbank? I don't feel it is fair on them to take the performance of a feminised seed as a judgement of their ability.
From the very first day I read about fems, I read about the dangers of fems. I learned first-hand exactly how little of a light-leak can trigger a herm. In a sea full of clones, people usually notice a herm here and there and blame the breeder. Well if it was ONLY the breeder, ALL plants would herm at the same time, they are CLONES.
Another thing I have noticed, and you can look at it here on RIU, for every herm issue, there is a response about NOT having them with the same strain. Take a look and you will find it is usually the Grandaddys of growing that have no complaints. Why? THEY'RE ON TOP OF THEIR GAME. It takes years to get there, really.
I feel when growing feminised seed, the error-margin on the grower's part shrinks to just about nothing. Don't touch 'em if you haven't been doing this a long time. For the rest of us, there are CLONES. They cost a bit, but we end up with something solid. Even the granddaddy growers go for fems only in particular circumstances: Pressed for time is usually it. But trust me most of 'em are gonna have a special clone and some more beans on the way.
Then also certain lines are simply just more prone to herming, and of course this can only be discovered after a bunch of people have grown it out. The breeders usually have IDEAL conditions so it's not something they themselves will really run into when developing a batch and testing it. I honestly do not think ANYBODY unleashes herms on the public on purpose, this is a close-knot industry and word spreads fast, you won't survive a week as a rip-off artist.
Just my two cents on the topic, I've been a bit upset at some of the breeders that are responsible for the best plants in my garden ever get such crap treatment. I have never had a problem with Barney's Farm nor Cali Connection for example, but I've also never planted a feminised seed. If it was all so crap, then I woulda been getting crap for YEARS, not been losing out on my own homegrown because chronic pain patients are BEGGING me for it because it's all that takes the pain away.
If you burn your fingers with fem technology, blame it on the TECHNOLOGY not the breeder. The breeder simply supplies what is asked for from him, I remember the days when ALL seeds were normal, now it's so bloody hard to find normal seeds! The main customer is a casual grower, most of the guys buying seeds won't come on these forums or build a nice SOG. They just want to drop it in a pot and forget about it outside and get some decent nugs. A casual hobbyist, and fem technology suits THAT man just fine.
But the rest of us aren't THAT guy, are we?
