it is called OG kush since it is grown near the ocean. Most of the OGs are in LA area. Compared to the popular mainstream buds are grown up in the Mountains in North California. Simple as that. Not literally grown in the ocean lol.

Ahh Thank You Mr. inhale. . . is there something special about ocean air? I could easily whip up a batch of salt water and have a fan blowing across it lol

There is nothing special about the ocean air. It just happens that a breeder bred a Chem dawg with some indica which I don't know exactly the genetics are. The breeder Lives around LA near the ocean. A person sampled the bud and said "That is some great ocean grown bud" Hence the name OG came out.

I've always heard the term OG Kush originated to distinguish the real deal kush strains from multiple knock-offs going around in the 90's.

OG stands for Original Gangster, but it is often used to coin items as being completely original, or not a knock off. Hence, OG Kush, that real shit.

Makes more sense to me that Ocean Grown...Growing next to the ocean would be a nightmare!!!

Agreed on the nightmare, stomata on the leaves will close due to potassium in the guard cells being much lower than the salt water concentration.. would assume that even a light salt would cause this, perhaps not to the extent of a homemade salt water mix.. but enough to cause issues.

not with this strain...damn how did such a retarded rumor get started...
Would guess people saying it's Original Gangster (OG) Kush on a few other cannabis forums.. which with a google search I just did out of curiosity, points back to 2007-ish.. which with further peeking, may go back even further.

In late '93 John from Grass Valley Ca. got the Chem Dog cut. He shared it with Jerry(cowboy) from Dibble Creek Ca. and Harold(Putz) from Sunset Beach Ca. Putz had a male he called the secret ingredient. It was a cross of Lemon Thai and an Old World Paki Kush. Putz bred the secret ingredient to the Chem Dog. The buds that came out of this cross were going around So. L.A. county in '95. Someone told Putz that Kush must be so good because it was mountain grown. Putz laughed and told him "this Kush is Ocean Grown Kush bro". The tag stuck and it became known as OG Kush.
