I Love Lamp...

Hello fellow stoners.

Would someone be able to identify this lamp type....

A friend of mine gave it to me. I'd like to know if it's Mh / sodium etc, and whether it'd be safe to use for my small grow area. He removed it from a warehouse when he replaced the lighting.

I'd appreciate your help people! Thank you!

its either mh/hps. the ballast is built in. and yes that would grow way better pot than any clf or floro tube could.

Nice one!! Thank you Bleezy =)

The cable has no plug. Any idea on whether I could just stick a plug on it and away I go, or is anything else required? And if I can use a standard plug, what Amp fuse would be safe? Sorry for all the questions - I appreciate any help you can give!

Thanks again!

lol! Yeah, it's a proper oldschool lamp isn't it! I rigged it up with a plug just now. My grow room looks like the content of Marcellus Wallis's briefcase in Pulp Fiction =) Fuck me, it's bright! It's a completely different colour than the Envirolite CFL's I'm using. It's a warm yellow compared to the crisp white of the CFL's.

I think it's sodium, based on the length of time it took to get to full brightness. I'll take a snap... brb.

Yeah baby!...

I've put the fan on to keep it cool, and am monitoring the heat output. All is groovy right now. I think I'll only use it when I'm in the house, and only in flowering. I think I'll also rotate the plants around each day so they all benefit from the lamp.

I probably could but I'd have to take down both Envirolite CFL's. I just spent £70 on one of the CFL Lamps and a reflector.

Now, there's a conundrum. Would it be better to stick up the sodium lamp or leave the CFL's??

aside from the dvd's and journals people make on here and other sites, ive only witnessed 2 grows at a good friends place, his first was with CFL and the 2nd he started with an envirolite then changed to a 600w MH/HPS combolight, either that or he ran the MH for a while then went to the HPS.....the difference was AMAZING and noticable in a very short space of time......CFL's you can grow with, but youll get fuck all compared to what youll get with a proper light hung above the plants, he's come to the conclusion it (light) should be about as far away from the tops of your babies as the length is from your elbow to your fist tip

although he has now got himself an aircooled reflector and is literally close to messing his own underwear as he can have his light more or less sitting on top of his plants

in my very humble opinion id go for the proper light everytime after seeing the difference in the flesh once he unzipped his grow tent

i just wish i had the cajones to do my own!!

good luck man

Cheers people. I've taken your advise and have set up the sodium lamp over the tops of my babies.

The light is vastly different from the Envirolite CFL's I was using. I only did it just now, so haven't seen any benefit yet.

I planted the plants off-center in the pots so that they could all get some of the CFL action. Now that I have the sodium lamp set up, I've moved them around so they're not all bunched together. I can really see where the foliage has suffered from being bunched together.

The Sodium lamp seems to penetrate the foliage more than the CFL's. There aren't as many patches in shade- all the leaves seem to be swamped with glorious light! I think they'll be happier =)

Here's a pic I just took. I'll take another when I finish work at 10 tonight and compare...

Cheers OB! I thanked him a lot for this! He's a sparky and has a garage full of these lamps! (he removes them from warehouses when he updates their lighting). He knows the value of 'em! I did his website for him as a thank-you!

The leaves are all starting to raise more now - more perky. I only put the lamp up an hour ago! Can't wait to see them when I finish work. I'll keep you all posted =)

Here's a pic showing the difference 6 hours makes with a sodium lamp. Even the 'runt' plant (front right) is starting to brighten up. The plant at the back right is looking chirpy, too...

Thanks people.

Do you know how you can tell between a high and low pressure sodium lamp? Is there a way of telling?

If it is a low pressure lamp, can I simply buy a different bulb or are the couplings completely different?

Anyway, it's certainly a better lamp than the CFL. Take a look at this pic I just took...

i dont think its low pressure- that bright orange light, and the fact that it was in a warehouse would suggest its not a low-pressure bulb- i do know they are not interchangeable... so if it is, you cant just replace the bulb,

But clearly what you got is way better than before, and I would be more than willing to bet that its HPS

Amazing to see the difference in just 6 hrs, thats valuable research that more CFL users should see...

Hello people. My plants have gone mental. The HPS lamp has done wonders since being fitted. I also just switched on my original Envirolite lamp on too- just to give it some extra light (can't hurt, can it). Here's a pic illustrating 24hrs of growth....

As I mentioned in my last post, I've put my babies on a 12/12 flowering light cycle. Well, this morning I checked on them (I've not seen them for 24hrs). They've shot up. I think they're gonna be BIG! Here's a few pics.

Remember, your comments are always welcome!

..and another..

..and finally...

As you can see, the 'runt' plant (front right) has certainly perked up since the introduction of the HPS lamp =)

I'm now using the HPS lamp AND my 200Watt 6,400K Envirolite lamp with reflector. My plants love lamp(s)!! In case you're not familiar with the Envirolite range, here's a pic....
