I suck and I'm venting

cloning has become a bit of a sore spot for me lately.

for years, i had no problem. my method is simple: take a cutting, nip it at 45 degrees underwater, dip it in rooting powder, place it in a dixie cup filled with perlite, put it in a dome under minimal light, wait 3 weeks (gradually opening the dome more and more along the way).

it wasn't the fastest or the best method, but i could usually count on about 80% success rate or higher.

nowadays, i just lose hope. i was getting less than 50% success for a couple of batches, so i switched my medium from perlite to a sand/peat moss mixture. that was a miserable failure. i tried more advanced techniques, such as taking the cutting right where the branch meets the main stem, slicing the tip of the cutting, exposing cambium, and whatnot, just bullshit and more bad luck.

i noticed some mold in the corner of the closet i leave my clones in, so i cleaned that up and thought i was in the clear. nope. the batch that i just put in there after cleaning is already 50% dead due to stem rot after 4 days. the previous patch had 50% success rate with the small patch of mold there.

i should mention that unlike before, when i had higher success, i have been way more careful about sterilizing my tools and myself before starting a batch of clones.

i had a friend of mine come by and try his technique, which is jiffy rooters into a real humidity dome and under a stronger light and a heating pad on at times (and gel instead of powder). had about 50% success on those, but they look much uglier by the time they root. will probably try that method again and see if i can't dial it in more.

i'm about to try rooting into a glass of water in dim, indirect sunlight.

people, tell me what a piece of shit i am and/or give me novel methods of cloning. i will try to root these things in cat food if i have to.

Would you like to feel better parder ? I, spiffly cloner dome and all, have never had a single clone that lived. AAnd like you, I tried all the same things. Difference is, 100% failure rate every single time. I had a set of 10 I actuallt killed in less than an hour. I had them under a dome and thought they may enjoy an hour on the windowsill on a nice day......and steam cooked them all like broccoli or spinich or something. So, when you think you got it tough, somebody has it tougher.....And thank god for seeds.

I used to get into all the bs of cloning, had bubble cloners all that crap. Would get grey slime and shit, ruin my clones.

Rapid Rooters
A rusty razor blade ( used same one for oh a year or so now)
Rapid rooter tray with dome
1 Gallon of RO water from grocery store (more than enough for a full tray of 50)
Rooting compound - I use vitagrow, its really all the same.

Thats it , I give myself 97% success I might have 2-3 bad clones out of a tray and its usually because of lazyness on the cut or something I caused.

Im not careful, Im not clean, its simple.

Once there in the rooters I just toss the dome on the floor on a heat pad next to my T5 veg station. Hell I dont even spray the dome anymore , the heat pad causes enough condensation in the dome.

those cups cost at least $4 for 25 or so, it's more like the $0.15 hydrocloner.
Update....I had the wife pick me up some new hydrocloners today. They no longer have the 3oz. They are now 5oz. 80 for $1.98+.12tax=$2.10/80=.02626 cents each. And they are reusable ! For that price I may never bother with a clone machine.

A HUGE, lumpy, steamy, stinky, chunky piece of shit.;-):bigjoint:

Seriously though, i have had a similar experience. i was rather proud of my 80% success rate in my early cloning attempts and then wanted to raise my success % so tried a ton of different techniques. i ranged from 50%-0% and finally went back to my simple (and similar to your) seedling soil/perlite in dixie cups, homemade humidity dome (look up my turkey cloner thread), and CFL's. VERY little success even after returning to this method though :wall::wall::wall:
