I'm so confused...

Thats what a lot of us do. You dont have to obtain new seeds, and you know you're getting 100% females so long as the mother is actually a female.

My roommate said that you can wrap some of the leaves with plastic or saran wrap and then see if it grows red hairs or not, if it grows hairs it's a male... is this true?

LOL... please stop listening to your roommate... he or she is quite the :dunce:

No offense meant.... but really... you will be better off posting a grow journal and getting advice from folks around here ;)

How do you know when your plant is good and ready to be picked? When cloning, how long can you keep the mother plant in the vegetative stage before you HAVE to move on to the next stage?

You never HAVE to move on to veg. I have 3 plants here which will likely be in vegetative growth the remainder of my life :)

What do you mean "ready to be picked?"

Yes, I've come to see that and that's why I'm soooo confused now. I did a bunch of reading online and thought I knew pretty much what I was doing and he tells me I'm wrong and keeps telling me how to do it and I'm getting really frustrated with him actually because some of the stuff you can tell he's just pulling it out of his *** and the rest confuses me. I've always dreamed of growing and he's got me so discouraged right now... Thanks guys.

When you start removing the buds from the plant. Do you have to hang them to dry or how do you dry them?

Unless you see your room mate produce a large successful crop, and trust him well - I wouldn't count anything he says for more than just assumptions.

You can hang them dry, or you can build and use a quick dryers. I generally see the same results both ways. There is a link to my quick dryer in my signature that will show you how to build one for very very very cheap.

After drying, it's nice to start the cure process to get the smell and taste you want.

What all does the cure process entail?

there are a variety of refectors you can use, some air cooled, some not. It's really about the type of grow you plan on managing, and the funds you have available to support it.

I recommend you check out www.insidesun.com and some of the other shops out there.

Jarring, and burping the buds after they have been appropriately dried.

I keep 50% full jar of freshly dried flowers in the dark cool area, and I burp them for about 25 minutes every day. This enhances the taste/smell/smoke.

Burp meaning putting a lid on and take it off for 25 minutes a day?

Honestly I think one of the best investments you can make is a book. Go to Amazon.com and search on keyword mj. I bought this one: Amazon.com: Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower's Bible: Jorge Cervantes: Books
and I use it ALL THE TIME!

Sure you can always get advice here.... but there is nothing like having a book in your hands to help you at any hour of any day. You don't have to read it cover to cover either.... you can skip around and read sections you are interested in. I swear you will get your money's worth and then some out of a book.

Awesome, you all have been very helpful... Do you have any other cheap tricks/tips to producing good plants? How much should I expect for my first plant to yield?

I recommend you open a grow journal, read as much as possible. Read the grow faq, and take clones of your plants so you can keep a constant supply of plants.

Pick up good nutrients, better lights, better air movers, etc. Always improve.

Flower
- Changing light to the 12/12 cycle signals to the plant that fall is coming and it's time to flower. What it's really doing is preparing for the end of its life and going into it's reproduction mode... flowering waiting for pollination to grow seeds. Generally the flowering stage lasts 8 to 12 weeks.... but really you can't control that.... the plant will finish when it's good and ready. Get a small hand held microscope from Radio Shack $10.... so you can keep your eye on the trichs... which is how you determine when she's done.

What are trichs and what do you look for on them?

trichs are trichomes

you look for them on the buds, and inner areas of the leaves around the buds

the trichomes carry the THC which gets you high.

I plan to keep improving everything but for now I just want to start off really really cheap since I don't know what I'm doing yet. What nutrients do you recommend? I have Fox Farm Ocean Fresh soil, do I need to add nutrients? I do have tests strips to test the pH.
