Indoor/Outdoor Season Journal

OK NeL thanks. I picked up a pack of those stick at Home Depot today. They are a green too so they should blend in better than the light colored dowel rods I got from the hardware store. They only had 6 footers but I think they will be better than what I currently have. I think I'm going to head out tomorrow to do them up better and maybe try LSTing one of them. I would imagine like most people LSTing the first time, I'm a little concerned about breaking the stalk. I wasn't sure if you could do that at this point, but I'm gonna give it a try. I'm guessing you mean plant the stake the opposite side I'm going to bend, so I can use the stake to anchor the stem at the bottom and bend the opposite direction?

Any other tips or general advice at this point in the game? What do you think about topping or FIMing outdoor plants?

You could fim or top but I don't. As far as bending just bend it as far as it can without breaking. If you ever find that your plant is snapped just upright it and give it some support and it will heal. Pretty much as long as it isn't broken in 2 different pieces it will heal. Here's a pic of one of mine from last season that split 3 or 4 times. It even broke the zip ties I put on it. I would use garden tape instead of zip ties as it will expand, also sold at HD. Plants are prone to splitting at the Y later in the season.

Cool man, I'll throw that little trick in the vault. Back towards the begining of your outdoor thread you said you put some clones out late last season and you still got about 1/4 lb from each. How late if you still remember? I was thinking since I lost a few plants already this year and still have a lot of seeds, I might get 2 or 3 more going to take their place. Or, since I'm pretty sure that the one big one is female, maybe trying to cut a couple clones from it. I'm not sure if you can do it, but take some clones off outside plants and bringing them back in until they root.

Oh I think it was late July. I'll go cruise my thread from last season and get back to you on that.

I took a cutting from the plant that's showing preflowers. It was towards the bottom and was getting eaten alive by bugs anyway. I don't have any rooting hormone or anything, so I just plopped it into a peat pellet. I'm not really expecting it to survive, but hey, maybe I'll get lucky. It was probably a good 15-20 minutes until I got out of the bush and got it home.

Nice. Thanks a lot buddy. So that Grapefruit x NYCD must be the shit your growing it 2 years in a row. Is that the strain from Next Generation or your own cross? How do you get them so full and bushy like that, the metal halide? It says you have it set up vertically. How does that work? Wouldn't only one side and the plants closest to it get the light? Mine are starting to fill out a little, but they look bare compared to yours. Even with my best plants, the internodes are still like 6-8" apart.

I'm surprised that cutting I took yesterday looks good so far. It's only been about a day, but it hasn't wilted or anything so far. I'll be amazed if it actually pulls through and takes root. No rooting hormone, humidity dome, heating pad, or anything like that. Just have it sitting on the floor on a spot where light comes in through the window and keeping the peat moist. I have a small spray bottle and I've been lightly misting it too.

It's originally from Next generation. I've bred it myself several times. This is my 4th season growing it outside. Yeah they tend to bush out a bit more when I hang the light vertically. I have already scrapped all my MH's and am going with t5's for veg.

Decided I'm going to do a little experiment. I've received so much help and knowledge from this forum over the past few months, I thought I'd try something out and maybe learn somethat that I can contribute to the forum. I doubt I'm the first person to do this, but I haven't read anything about it so it's new to me. Since I still have a bunch of seeds sitting around doing nothing for me, I'm going to try to germ my other Cole Train freebie (the last one never cracked). Out of all the other half dozen or so threads I read about Cole Train, no one else's cracked, so I took some 320 grit sandpaper and very lightly scuffed the outside. If and when it cracks, I'm going to start it at 12/12 for about 3 or 4 weeks. By then, it will be mid July and I'm hoping the shortening days will keep it in flower. If anyone has any input I'd appreciate it. I have one main concert. Even though the days will be getting shorter by then, I checked the sunrise/sunset charts for my area and I'm looking at about 14.75/9.25 of light/dark. Hopefully by then, it will already be locked into flowering and the increase in light won't send it back to veg (or hermie on me!).

Flowering where I am doesn't start till august.

I'm using Botanicare Pure Blend Pro Grow for veg and Bloom for flowering. No particular reason why I chose Botanicare other than I got a good deal on it off ebay and read here a lot of people say it's solid. The big plants are getting the full dose and the smaller ones are getting half dose of Grow once a week weather permitting. The Low Girl got its first dose of Bloom today at half strength. It seems like its working well, although I don't really have anything to compare it to since this is my first serious grow.

The big ones are probably at least 3 feet tall. My remaing NL is stretching on me pretty bad. I tried bending it over but only got about 45 degree on it before it felt like it was gonna break in half, haha, should have done it sooner.

I'm sure they will start to fill out for you! They do look like some healthy outdoor plants. Have you had any problems with pests?

Lost one to rabbits or squirrels or something earlier in the season shortly after I put it out. It was digging at the roots for some reason and ended up uprooting it. It was strange, it didn't really eat any of it, but by the time I found it, it was too far gone or else I probably could have saved it. Lost the white dwarf and a NL to weather. The white dwarf was pretty small when I put it out and it was on a hillside. The first good rain pretty much washed it away. Same storm snapped the NL in half.

Other than that, I'm not doing too bad. Just a few issues with bugs. Think I'm going to spray again next time I'm out. I was out today to water and feed and they are starting to fill out nice for me. Getting that christmas tree shape to them. Ended up FIMing the remaining NL today. We'll see how that goes. The Ceres Purple is looking really nice. It's the only one that is staying short and bushy like I wanted. Pics next time.

It's in a peat pellet, so there isn't any way for me to see if there are any roots until they start coming out the bottom and sides. I'm going to stick with it as long as it doesn't start looking like shit and keeps showing new growth.

Damn that sucks that you lost a couple to weather and animals but I guess thats expected with outdoor growing, at least you have some nice healthy looking plants!!

What are you spraying them with for the bugs? I'm about to transplant my outdoor plants and put them in the woods so I want to get some good stuff to keep the bugs off. I was thinking of getting the FF don't bug me or something similar.

What are you doing with the clone for lighting? You keeping that indoor untill it gets strong roots going?

I got some Ortho Ecosense 3 in 1 rose formula from wal mart. I don't have a hydro store around here or anywhere to buy specialty stuff, so I either gotta go with wal mart, home depot, or lowes, or else order online. It works pretty good though. It contains the same stuff as the expensive Fox Farms stuff, and it also has sulfur, which is suppose to help with mold. I think it might be a little strong though. Next time I'm going to dilute it with a little water. Not sure if it was because I used it in the sun, used too much, or if that's just the way it is, but it kinda gave some of the leaves a waxy look to them. It didn't kill or damage them, just look funny now.

Got the clone under 2 15w T8 fluoros. Same thing I used to germ my other plants. Yeah I'm gonna keep it here until it gets big enough to take out, if it makes it. I originally just stuck it in the pellet, but the next day I went and got some clone powder. Pulled it out and trimmed up to a node. I read that a node has a better chance of forming roots rather than just bear stem. I started the Cole Train a few days ago and threw a 26w 6500K for that too. It was a 2 pack of bulbs, so I might get a Y splitter for the other one when it gets a little biger and germ this one a little longer than the other before I take it out. I like these high K CFLs, it almost looks like my buddies MH. Just not nearly as bright of course. I'm thinking about talkin too my pops and seeing if he'll let me just finish one off inside under CFL's or my 250w hps. It sucks, I had to move back in with my psycho parents about a year ago *sigh*. Damn economy. Nothing's more embarrassing than being in your late 20's, having 2 college degree, and having to move back in with your parents after being out on your own for almost 4 years.

See if you can get one of those babies going indoors, even if it is under cfl's!! I think my short riders would be a lot bigger "the ones outdoor." If I would have vegged them for at least 2 weeks under some cfl's... Owell you live and you learn!

So your indoor short ryders are doing better than the outdoor ones? It's the opposite in my situation. They blew up when I got them outside. Although my indoor veg "system" is pretty pathic.
