so i bought one of these babies to use as an intake fan and its too damn loud, even louder than my 6" vortex which i use for exhaust...

either i pull some McGyver shyt to quiet this fan down or i buy a new one...it must be 4" and quieter than this one though...any suggestions?

btw, right now i am just using a passive-intake system and its working fine, but when i start flowering i will need to cover up those holes so no light gets in my box, thats why i really need a (quiet) inline fan for intake before i start flowering

To silence the fan itself, you can place it in a box filled with insulating material, or wrap it in something like a duvet, sleeping bag etc.

To silence the noise of the air flowing through the system, you can use acoustic ducting, buy or build a muffler to silence the outtake, and/or use a speed controller to slow the fan down to a quiet, but functional, level.

Have you attached any ducting to it yet? This in itself usually quietens the noise considerably.

Is that a S&P TD150(100?)? I've only heard good things about them and was planning to get a 8" and thought they were quieter than Can-Fan, Vortex, etc..... So is it the air coming out making the most noise or the unit/motor itself?
Oh, and there are a few different 'light traps' in the diy sections if your passive is enough and your area stays cool enough in 12/12....

I haven't researched it enough to say from experience: maybe someone who has will chime in?, but there is something in the theory of vortex effect? If the noise your hearing is mainly air movement the theory is something to effect that if you have your exhaust pipe away from a flat surface(say your ducting sticking out/in and not flush to the surface(tent/cab) the noise reduces by 'x' amount, but it's significant, like 50%...........or something......

Sorry if I am on the wrong line here.......would still like to hear about your fan. What are you doing for odor control?

Have a great weekend!!

i have a bilge fan as well, looks just like that, and as you said, it works great but its loud as hell. Maybe build a sound box to put it in. Either way let me know if you find out a solution as I am in the same predicament.

it's a DetMar 7-5-1 (223 cfm).. used on boats i think. i just have the thing connected to an AC adapter, no ducting yet...

if someone can tell me how to rig up a speed controller, please tell me because i have no idea how... if that doesnt fix the problem i guess i can build a box lined with dynamat and those eggcrate foam thingies, because i dont think adding ducting is going to significally reduce the noise.

i am using a homebox btw

Sounds like you are using some sort of a 12 volt fan, for a boat exhaust.

I'm going to test the Wind Tunnel, most people on this site say the T&D is the best fan to get.
