it has come up to the 2 year mark and its time to get a new inline atm i have a 400cfm for a 600w hps just wondering how low can i go would a 250cfm pull the heat out or could we go lower let me no guys what use think

Not that its the same but for 432 watts of t5 I use 200 cfm 4in fan.

250 for 600 would be cutting it close. Maybe with air cooled hood.

Why are you replacing yours? Take it outside and wash it out. Take it apart and spray it out and possibly put new bearings in it.

If you do replace it go with the same size and put a variac on it to reduce speed and power consumption.

I've always been taught you should never control then below 50% and even that's pushing it. It damages the fan.
Half speed on a 600cfm is probably less than 300cfm and most variacs like mine shouldnt go much below half speed, stalling a fan will cause damage and probably why you dont want to run at too slow a speed. A variac will be better than thosr cheap speed controllers which can shorten your fan life. Also if you run the fan on the exhaust side you need to make sure it dosent get too hot which is another problem for inlines.
