Quick question for you guys out there ive done it both but i just wanna know what other ppl do my success rate sucks both ways i use jiffy cubes so its basiclly coming out the ground and its dark so why the light? Im sure uv penetrates some and helps with temps

Germed in a paper towel. Temperature kept around 80-85f.

Cracked seeds are placed soil with constant light. Once they break the surface, the light is kept on for about 3 days straight. Once the sprout stretch stops. Then they're put on a light/dark cycle.

If the sprout doesn't have light after it breaks the soil. It'll stretch to find it. Having the light on helps keep them short.

Well i think i bombed my seedlings last night they popped threw the jiffy cubes and i had my 600 watt light on the others that are vegging i think i took the dome lid off the seedlings to early because the just under the bulb of the plant you can still see the white part and it shrivled up a little bit i replanted them in my grow dirt and just put them under my t5s hope they snap back or thats 50 bucks down live learn and keep growing smh

germinate under a small flouro so they have light the second they pop up.
or ~3ft away from a 400wMH for example over to the side in the room.
You don't want to germinate the seeds under a 600w/1000w HID dead center under the lamp just feet away.
seedlings do not require any dome of any kind. <<this is asking for trouble.

I've done it both ways. right under a 24 hour led under counter lighting and also in the darkness. both rocked the same progress.
when they crack they go directly into wet promix in a cup now. used to use jiffy, then rapid rooter, fuck both of them now. same with clones...FTW

Got 25 in coco in the dark I have used burpees 10 day self watering seed trays for several years with 100% success.

Im also thinking i didnt drop them in far enough because last night some where still bent over in the cubes the bulb was still burried looked like a horseshoe

rockwool cubes, rapid rooters, jiggy pellets.. same here.. I would use wool cubes religiously for more than 10years for any seeds and clones, then it was the rapid rooters since they're soo much more 'organic'... it's all bullshit, if you're growing in soil, start them directly in soil, if growing in hydro using wool, start them in wool. I don't do paper towel method anymore either. It is not necessary and can be a reason contributing to failure. So far this last while after having this epiphany, putting them directly in soil to germinate, I would say is 99.9% success rate. maybe 1 seed of a bunch here n there wont pop, but that's because of the seed quality/age not my methods.

I use a small round jar, and line it with whatever sandpaper i have around, this time I used a fine 100grit paper. Coarser 80 and below would probably be better. Place seeds inside and vigorously shake and spin jar around for a few minutes. Then place seeds in a small glass of regular bottled spring water for 2-3hours only, to suck up moisture into it's embryo, which by this time most seeds will be sinking or half sinking when poked and pushed down. Using promix with a small amount of worm castings added, with pointy part of seed pointing up, with 2 fingers holding the seed push down only about 1/2 an inch into the loose premoistened/not soaked/not soggy soil and lightly cover with loose soil and barely tap down on top. use mist bottle and spray the spot on top real good then place over in a corner of the veg room, or in 'the cloning station' under a flouro tube. if at any point the cups/pots are feeling light as a feather and/or the top looks just super dry, mist the spot on top with spray bottle real good and give your forearms a 1minute workout. 2days seeds are up. slowly bring them closer and closer each day to the main veg light and more direct wind from the oscilating fan.. within 4-5 days they are directly dead center under HID standing strong.

in nature seeds start out right in the sun all the time, I've started seeds, both cannabis and veggie, under 400-600w MH lights with no problem. Use common sense to judge the light distance and you're fine. the main reason they shy from hid at first is because most people start them under fluoros or led then move them to hid. It's like turning on the light when your eyes have been in the dark. When you removed the dome you increased the intensity.
