new wood cuttings are a great idea. mb you should have taken seveal cuttings to increase your odds of success. was it a cut leaf maple or the other kind of jap maple?

i have a 15 ft japanees maple. it produces enough seeds that i have sprouts growing all over my yard. before i cut the grass i walk around and try to find the larges ones to pot them.

Japanese Maples are beautiful plants. I have a dwarf one that rarely gets seeds. Never tried cloning it though. Hmmm.

Well.......... did it root?

JapMap are really hard to get cutting to root. rooting hormone and a misting system can be used. There are a few articles on the net.

I could see it happening if he took it in the right spot. The new growth is like young pepper like stems for the first spring. if he did it early enough the stems could root IMO

I think the whole thing with Acer palmatum and cuttings has sprung from the Japs myself.
It's the only plant it's really happened to. They use cuttings (clones) to guarantee that the variety is is 'true' and command a premium price for doing so.
However, in other countries, the chances of it being pollinated by plants other than your own is at best, slim.
Besides, who cares if it's not a guaranteed 'true' AP dissectum, katsura etc as long as it's a nice plant. I sure don't and won't pay £20 for the privelage for a rooted cutting when I can get a sapling for £2.
It's one of the few plants where I would go for seed grown if buying it, simply because of cost.
p.s. look up 'air-layering' or ground layering.
