so once my likle seedlings reach the top of the cup then i top off wit soil to right below rim

DSC00644.jpgDSC00645.jpg

then the newly submerged part of trunk starts to grow roots - at this stage i always ad sum water right down the
base of the plant to stimulate root growth - i also use a lot rot stimulation - oh i left out micro from my seedlings meds no actual food yet not ready

and the things i use is just a drop or two to a gallon of water is mostly water

[h=2]Seed Starting – Damping Off[/h]Guest post by Beate Schwirtlich
Seed Rot or ‘Damping Off’… What is damping off?
This gentle term describes the death of seedlings by fungal disease, either before or after they emerge from the pod. This sudden plant death can happen for up to four weeks after seeds are started. It actually describers a few different fungal diseases carried in soil or seed. These fungi can survive for years or forever in soil, and are found in all soil outdoors.
Causes:

  • overwatering
  • unsterile soil
  • dirty growing containers
  • overcrowding seedlings
  • stress, such as low light, cool temperatures
Symptoms:

  • Seeds don’t germinate: they may have rotted underground
  • Sudden wilting or discolouration
  • seedling falls over: stem bends at soil level
  • roots of diseased plant are black or brown
Prevention:

  • Clean growing conditions.
  • Clean containers yearly
  • use sterile soil mixes.
  • Water seedlings from the bottom of their containers
  • Avoid overwatering
  • Don’t plant seeds too deep
  • Soil with a low pH: commercial starter mixes average 5.5 pH
  • Good ventilation: moving air
  • Use a soil-less starting mix, such as a peat moss/vermiculite mix. (This is not an environmentally friendly option, however, as peat moss is comes from sensitive bogs.)
  • Plant seeds on soil, but cover with sand instead of soil.
Protect seedlings organically:

  • Mist plants with either chamomile clove, or stinging nettle tea as a preventative. These herbal brews have known anti-fungal properties.
  • A one-time dusting of cinnamon powder or powdered charcoal on the soil surface will also help prevent damping-off.
  • Disinfect containers and tools with very hot water and biodegradable soap: this is the most environmentally conscious method. If you think you have a real problem with damping off, use one part bleach to four parts water, or a 70% solution of rubbing alcohol.
Confession of a lazy grower
I do only two things to prevent damping off: I avoid overwatering, and I provide good air circulation. My seedlings are doing fine

I started doing the same thing with the last couple batches of seeds. There's no way of making a seedling not stretch no matter how much light you
beam down on them.

It's all love Dweze.

I remember thinking about doing the same thing initially and then someone told me to be careful for dampening off. This was like 7 months ago...
Now-a-days I kinda do the same, ubt not as extreme I guess.

But I wait until it's first transplant, and then pot up to the cotyledons.
Ive not had any issue yet doing it that way...
But if you've never had issue your way, all is good and I think I'd try that over the way I've been doing it ya know.

I'm gonna "bite" your method lol and use it with my next seedling. Wont be for a couple months but still.....
I appreciate the idea at least!

Hmmmmmmmm...I don't know about that one...I've yet to have a strechty seedling, and I've had a few who node structures were like too tight to F.I.M and top...
65k and 5k CFLs 2"max away at all time lol! Seems to work wonders for me :joint:

Once you have nodes and true leaves growing the plant isn't really a seedling anymore. It's able to supply its own food. When a seedling has no leaves and just cotyldons to support cell growth then always stretch 4-6" out of the soil. Too many times have I had to support the little stalks of a seedling with a small stake and I've run into the problem to destroying the root system of a seedling by placing a stake through the roots.

Hmmm....I haven't had the stretch yet unless you're meaning just a normal skinny seedling for the first week and a half maybe.
I'm with you on the plants transition from a seedling to a vegging plant..I say somewhere between week 2 and 3 for me they hit their stride.
And def. after that first transplant. But I've never had that stretch...Always had tight plants by keeping lights close, putting the fan w/ them after 7 days, and bending and tapping the stems occasionally.

I had to pull 3 from my most recent crop of seedlings totally outta the soil to transplant them becuase I knocked the solo cups over, but they're good at this point.
They're in my sig if you wanna see what I mean.
Never had to support a stalk either...But I've only gone thru about 11 seedlings at this point so who am I to start talking about what I've done lol...No one really but you get what I'm saying...I think a little training and keeping the lights close negates the issues your facing. That and putting that fan on them as soon as you can.
Bending and tapping the stems really helps...If you need some literature let me know. I can screenshot my ipad. Got the idea from the book Growing Elite Marijuana By Ryan Riley :joint:

yeah torn i been runnin 250w eye hortilux -hps an a 250w phillips -cmh for about 3 years now
i also add a uvb after flowers are on there way for like 1 1/2 to 2 hours mid day
my feelings that it helps if you are runnin lower wattages
but if you look back few pages you will see old set up was fukery to da max

this is bette organized
but will be the same for the rest of grow career
both spectrums - i expect to be changing to 400 an 250 watts
soon an one day two 400's

if you look at pic #3 can see the yellow lght an the cmh
but i have a polarizing filter on my camera
cuts both affects to camera
