Kush? Help Me Understand the Hype

I was thinking the other day about all the strains i have tried and their corresponding effect on me and my wife. as i looked at litterly hundreds of little labels with strain names (i keep them all in a note book w/ a smoke report) i noticed that every Kush strain i have gotten, regardless where i got it from, was ranked lowest in our opinion.

I have tried everything from master kush to BUKU to most of the kush hybrids and still nothing. Not to say i don't catch a buzz, but for Indica dominate strains i was expecting somthing more. I typically enjoy strains with a more narcotic effect for pain and PTSD, and i have yet to find a Kush that fits that bill.

Now i'm not bashing this strain, i just don't get all the hype behind "Kush". Maybe it's just my brain.

I think it comes from 'street-lore.' By that I mean, the streets are highly uneducated when it comes to herb. Unless you live in a place where it's legal in some form and people are more educated as it becomes more main stream.

Where I live, the average connesoirre doesn't know the difference between white, purple, haze, kush, diesel strains.... they walk around asking, "is that dro?" Or, "is that kush?"

I think it's just one of those things that somewhere, somehow the word kush was dropped in a song, or used by some celebrity, and the streets just took to that phrase and made a big deal out of 'kush.' But to peeps like us that are involved, we just know it's just another type of herb, and how much each individual person likes 'kush' is solely a matter of preference.

Yeah there was a time where my BM dealer would call everything "Kush" because of that reason, needless to say i dont go to her anymore..

Believe it or not....green crack has been a god send. It helps the pain and it is the only stain i have not had a panic attack with. Other strains dull the panic attacks caused by PTSD but Green Crack shuts it off. also Grand Daddy Purps and Skunk 1 were really good. and of course there is a strain called "Yugo" that i have gotten twice that was as good if not better than Green Crack, but that strain is from a local breeder and i have not been able to find it any ware in seed or clone form.

In my opinion The og kush rush in socal is not just a trend but a staple of the town like staples center. If somebody questions the quality of some og kush then the shit they had was not og kush. the first time you smell and smoke some you will be blown away. There are heavier indica's and sativa but the combination of the high and taste is unmistakable. The people i talk to out here dont nothing but og and if you try to pass something off as og you will called out.

Ocean Grown Kush is still one of my all time favorite strains, and yes its what sets Cali Growers apart from the rest of the world.. Most strains with the famous Chem-Dawg cut are excellent strains.

It started as some stupid ass socal hype. Just like how granddaddy purp was some dumb ass bay area hype. Everyone just calls chronic og kush in so cal it's fucking stupid. The strain itself is said to have the most thc content of all kushes... whoop dee doo. I've smoked so much of that stupid strain that I'm fucking bored of it.

Anyone who knows anything about chronic can easily smell a bag and tell what it is. OG Kush has the fuel smell to it that Chem Dawg has.

Being in the business for a minute, I have found 3 truths. 1.) The majority of people who grow suck at it, 2.) A name is just a name. You can have the best genetics in the world from the best breeders and still produce shit weed. And yes if you call it a Kush, many people will buy it just for the name. But those are just the uneducated knuckleheads who follow pop culture and can read well. I started out as a reader and ended up a cannaseur :), and through that journey I found my last most agonizing truth, 3.) Not all weed is created equal. I have had some dank dank GDP, and some terrible GDP. I have had some dank diesel and boo boo diesel. Same strain, different growers. As you go farther and farther down the rabbit hole, you will learn what to look for in good weed, and the name won't be the first thing you look at. Look at the bud size/structure, trichomes, and aroma. This will serve you better than reading a name off of the net. Knowing your strains is good and all, but telling apart the good growers from the bad is the key. I have been tricked twice into buying shitty weed that looked good/smelled good, the other times I was very pleasantly surprised to try something I had or had never heard of and found it to be amazing. I have been mad more times than I care to count at buying some weed that had a dank well known name like diesel, kush, purple, whatever, just to get it home and find it to be crap. Buy the dank, not the name.

Kushes are great strains. They help me quite a bit with pain and PTSD also. I grow many strains including Kushes. But i've also found many Sativas or Sativa dominants that allow me to work all day help me stay alert and focused, but dull the pain and take away my anxiety. I thought originally that I liked indicas mainly, but found that the strains that helped me the most were mostly sativa dominants, and the trippier strains that I love are Sativa Dominants. Casey Jones, Diesels, TGA Strains, etc. Don't get me wrong, I keep some wicked indicas like Blue Cheese and White Lightning around to help me sleep at night, but when I don't want my motivation and will sapped from me and have shit that I need to get done, I like to go to a nice sativa.

My advice would be to find what works for you and grow it. I keep finding more and more people that I can lump into a few categories. Some like the Berry or fruit flavored dank like Blueberry, Strawberry Cough, Agent Orange, etc. Many of those people don't like Skunk or Diesel Strains. Many like the Diesel strains, but don't like berry or skunks. Some like skunks, but don't like the other two. This is just a quick generalization of what I observe. But then you get a few people who like it all. I like it all, that is if the grower has done a good job of it. Dank is Dank. Just because YOU don't like a Kush or Diesel doesn't mean that it hasn't helped millions of other people who love it. Find the strains that you like, but don't bash the ones that you don't like because it is a matter of personal opinion and preference. More often than not most people who don't like Kush or whatever haven't had a proper sample of some crazy ass Kush.

I agree with you NightbirdX, it's all about growers techniques.
But personally I don't really like coffee taste/smell
I prefer fruity strains like Cheese, Blueberry, Diesel and of course my favorites HAZE strains, generally speaking Sativa dominant strains

I used to be a kush hater because everything was kush, just like back in the 90's people where calling everything indo. I have smoked em all, even before I got my card my buddy was driving to Hollywood every weekend to pick up for me and plain ol OG is some of the best I have smoked with some Pre-98 Bubba following close behind. If grown right, the shit is knock out and then you know what all the fuss is about.

Well last night i got some more... and it was better, but still not top 5. your are correct and i agree it all in how it is grown and cured, however 99% of the stuff i get from this specific place is amazing...so i am chaulking it up to the strain. i guess Kush just isn't my thing...i also got some Kona Gold, Grapefruit Diesel, and Casey Jones X Trainwreck...the CJxTW was by far the best, tasted like Juicy Fruit, hit like a ton of bricks.
