yeah im using a chinese 300w panel i didnt know these blackstars were so cheap or i would have bought them instead but the guy said he spent 500 bucks on this quad band 300w chinese led and i got 200 bucks for it off craigslist so.... cant be that bad for that price.... I should have looked at ebay and blackstars before i bought it though for a few extra bucks i could have bought a 240w for a few extra bucks ....

Whatever you get make sure it has a UV wavelength in there, that has really helped my grow along...I don't have anyother LED's to compare against, just blackstar. Yes they have a website, although it looks like they bailed out on making it half way through, as it has not been updated in some time. They sell so much through their ebay store that I doubt they want the trouble of handling a webserver (honestly this is just a couple of guys in a hydro store who are the sole US distributers of Blackstar)...if you google gotham hydroponics their site comes up...I would recommend calling them, its never a bad idea, they like to talk. They will lay it out for you in a pretty down to earth fashion without all the marketing BS of how their LEDs will bring peace to the middle east.

Whats so good about blackstar vs. illuminator: Blackstar is comparable output and performance and half the price. There is nothing super fancy about blackstar outside of their price, they actually understand that LED's won't be a viable option for growers unless the price drops, so apparently they run a low budget, small but very busy distribution business that has a very low operating cost, and pass that along to make them competitive. They have all the bandwidths needed to make it effective, and that is all they need.

No fancy website, no ridiculous claims, no silly designs, no adjustable BS, just case, fan, led go...All that other shit mentioned just bakes in a higher operating cost for their business, and therefore a high cost for their products.

You should just call up, im starting to sound like a salesman now, but i have had to defend blackstar from haters in the past, so I have a well rehersed rant to throw back against actual salesmen trying to put my shit down to push theirs...Im sure I am not the only one...Just get an LED that has UV, White, Red, and Blue. I recommend 6 wavelengths, there's 4's that work well, 6's, 8's, 11's. Whatever you want...

That is the thing with LED's it's not as cut and dry as HID lighting, there are a lot of fine details that differentiate the various platforms. Its not just like 120000 Lumens at this color temp. Its how many watts of each wavelength, what angle are the lenses, what kind of chipsets are they, blah, blah, blah...

I know that blackstar uses several brands of chips, including cree and bridgelux, they shit runs real cool, the wavelengths include the red(several wavelengths of red)/blue/white/UV/Infrared, and the angles on their lenses range from 60 degrees to 120 degrees depending on the wavelength...Most of this info is available on their ebay posts...

Honestly I don't think you can go wrong with most of the LED's on the market these days, so whatever you pick: good on ya. I also like haight solid state, kessil, LEDgrowlightsdirect.com, and .357 magnum. I went with blackstar as I couldn't see thier products being effective as the equivlant money being spent on blackstar lights.
For Example:
Haight solid state is an amazing LED grow light, it uses 6W, automotive LED chips...completely solide state, no fans, so on and so forth.
I have seen some very good grows with these lights. They are an amazing alternative to HID lighting, however, versus other LEDs on the market the waters begin to become muddy.

They have a 180W model for $495 dollars. Great model...
For the same money though, you can get 480W or 3W chips (2 x 240W blackstars). I have a VERY hard time believing that you wont be able to grow the same amount, if not more plants, under the blackstars for the same expenditure. Chances are you would be able to get more than the haight, at a deeper penetration (as the LED source is concentrated higher with blackstar).

Now, dealing with the foot print of a light, for OPTIMAL performance of the blackstar, each 240W unit will do 6 sq.ft. I'm sure most people on here will agree to that (if you own one) and probably say you may be able to squeeze a touch more. So two units will yeild 12 sq.ft. of OPTIMAL led lighting coverage. Haight says that the 180W unit will do a maximum of 16 sq.ft., with out giving the optimal effective lighting area. If the optimal is 16 square feet than I would wonder about its penetration. I know that most companies wont get up to 16sq.ft. of optimal coverage without being at a bare minimum of 400W due to lens angle constraints.

So really that was my thinking behind the blackstars, I can spend 500 bucks on 180 watts, or 480W, and not have to worry about having to purchase more lights later on.

My first light was a 500W, and I went back for the 240W. About to buy a few more of them next month.

40-50% increase in yields, that seems like a stretch.......keep us posted though
LOL my bad, typo; I meant 30-40% ...I'll be happy w/ a 30% increase when I add it to my 400 watt HPS...to be honest even w/ a 25% increase I'll be happy..

I really dont want to add too much wattage and fan noise, but wanted to increase the yields in my flowering closet. Yeah I know Id get more production from HID, but the tradeoff of electricity, more cooling, cooltube, isnt really feasible for me. Ill be starting a new grow journal once the LED gets here, Ill post a link as soon as I can.

hahaha so true but damn if people just dont know how to think anymore man it really blows my mind. I mean what happens if all of society goes that far. In fact its already like that lost cause fuck it im movin to the middle of no where leave me and my leds alone.

Why is everything personalized? And what happened to critical thinking skills?

It's the internet, home of the personal insult (ad hominem) posing as argument. Also home of the impatient, inexperienced, yet highly opinionated Young Person. I mean, this is a forum for pot growing, which means it'll get more younger, uncritical types than most forums. Oh, and many of the posters are quite stoned and so, a bit lazy-minded (once the initial brain rush of the buzz wears off).

i agree with almost all of this except the footprint area im having trouble with my blackstar 240 completely covering a 6sqft area, only problems showed up later in flowering as you can see the center mass nugs are WAY bigger. the 240's optimal footprint is like honestly honestly its best for 2x2 you want 2x3 get the 300w panel as it is a LITTlE bit wider. You can get away with 2x3 thought with the 240 just not optimally i would say as i am just noticing the difference in bud size. Its me nit picking though the difference isnt really enough to worry about so i guess in essence yea your right 6 sq ft is about right but i think it could cover it a little better.

Word, that sucks indeed. The foot print is SO the limiting factor for LEDs and is their major constraint. My 500W has about a 10-12 square foot footprint. But whatever, that just goes to show you that nothing is ultimately better than anything. HID has a pretty amazing footprint, t5's have the ease of use, cfl's have the versatility, LED's have the precision. They all have their downsides too I suppose. I just laugh when I see a website saying that their LEDs cover 20 sqft (yeah of lettuce). I have to appreciate blackstar at least trying to not pump up peoples expectations on foot print. One has to understand that the coverage areas they are pushing on most LED models are not the coverage you need for flowering marijuana. Blackstar is pretty close on their estimates, (perhaps not as close as possible), but moving in the right direction. They are one of the few suppliers that tend not to stretch their foot print. They dance around the fact that they are made in china, however it is really directed at chinese distributers (which are a bit sketchy sometimes) and american distributers (which are a bit sketchy as well), not so much the manufacturing location.

i agree with almost all of this except the footprint area im having trouble with my blackstar 240 completely covering a 6sqft area, only problems showed up later in flowering as you can see the center mass nugs are WAY bigger. the 240's optimal footprint is like honestly honestly its best for 2x2 you want 2x3 get the 300w panel as it is a LITTlE bit wider. concur sir blackstar was the most honest in their claims however their advertising is a bit of a turn off at first but now with all the good press that we have been giving them in this thread im sure its cleared up a lot of that at least with the people on this forum looking at them. I been more than satisfied with mine thinking about going to a 600w over my 2x3 area and scrogin the shit out of it. I just had to fucking throw up a gang of lines and pull em all kinda toward the center so the tops get more light cuz my cola'a are huge and dripping lol well maybe not 600w hps baby leg huge but chunky as hell def bigger than my 400 ever gave me. These fuckers are heavy too, come to find out one or two plants in the center took over the table and its mostly their cola's im cutting down from27 next time to somewhere in the teens probably. Next time i wont have a 5 foot mother that has to fit into a 3 ft box either though lol.

out of interest, what do you kessil owners think the foot print of one kessil light is?
any feedback appreciated

i too would like to know if it is actually 2x2 an not exaggerated. I wouldn't think kessil would exaggerate but you never know

Ive heard they have impressive coverage for what they are...if you have a PC grow or a really small tent grow they are about as good as a UFO, I just wonder about having one color? If you buy 2 or 3 how do you concentrate their focus? All on the same foot print or make a slightly larger footprint with the mixed color but lose the individual wavelengths effectiviness towards the outer regions of the footprint more so than usual???

Hey guys/girls, this is my 2nd grow im doing now. currently i have two seedlings veg'in under a shitty 100w HPS lamp, which i want to change i have been looking into all the various light fitting's and stuff and came across this LED light. ive heard mixed feed back about LED's but any feedback would be great please check it out.
Cheers

i wouldnt suggest using those flimsy cheap units with no refraction and poor led output. this is what i got and you can haggle with them to get a GREAT deal.

A good way to get an impression of the quality of the light and the quality of the person selling the light (especially on eBay) is to have a look at the other chinese made crap that they are selling.

They would offer zero after sales service and it would be a fair assumption that they don't have a clue about the specifics of the lights that they sell.

Only buy from either a light manufacturer (who can give details of the lights specifications in detail) or a reputable Hydro store that has a bricks'n'mortar address that you can visit if needed.

LEDs aren't cheap (unless they are CHEAP) so don't buy from someplace that won't be able to help when you need it.
