I run a Blackstar 240 watt LED right next to a 400 watt HPS in my flowering space.
The HPS blows it away, not even close. Much stronger light, way more coverage as well.

Im gonna sell the LED for 1/2 what I paid for it. I ran them side by side for 3 full months in my perpetual grow, using clones from the same mothers. The HPS beats it head to head in yield, flower size and density.

Use your money on an HPS and an air cooled hood. Im not saying that LED doesnt grow, it does. Its just not as well as HID. If power consumption and heat are a problem then I could understand using LED, if not theres no way Id use LED again.

Too make up for the big cost difference in the light, most companies say the wattage is stronger than it really is.. If you figure about even i beleive the output would be about even also.. Most folk in here always say go with HPS but not everyone wants or can get the big spike in electric, ( reason for search warrent ), or the extreme heat build ups that come from HPS. You post an awsome question though and i hope more folk with real experience between all types of lights post here with facts, watts, and such so we can all get some knowledge on!

extreme heat isnt a problem with air cooled hoods.and youd have to use an enormous amount of electricity to make a power company suspicious.

I will address the power company issue. If you get your Power from a GOVERNMENT RUN company they WILL look into usages and if need be contact local authorities. I have EDISON as my provider, they Have SENT ME A LETTER REGARDING MY USAGE. was only to inform me incase I was unaware & had some bad circut wasting power. I told them its fine & continued paying my Bills. thats that. Be careful with GOVERNMENT RUN COMPANYS, they work hand in hand with law enforcement

yup i have bin looking for any led grows that can compare to HPS i here all the bla bla bla yet no pics as people seem to disapear when its time to prove it
with tech growing way it is sure led looks good on paper but what counts is yield
and also when it comes to power kinda simple re wire to 220V that will cut costs in half

Bro run a 250 hps and the biggest led u can get ur hands on and tell me hps does nt win!! Im running over 25oo watts in my grow and i ve done alot more in the past and neva had electricity company on my back cus i pay my bills every week without fail so no need to look into anythin trust me all they care about is money and aslong as there gettin it they dont give a monkeys how your using it legally or illegally why would they rat u out as we us growers pay more than people that dont!! And if u dont like caining electic either stop growin or find other sources to run your shit eg solar panels but me ill happily give em my 500 pound every 3 months if i can earn it back 20 fold every time!!

no it wont! if you are running 220 volt you draw half the amps but double the volts. with 110 it double the volts half the amps. If 220 was half the cost EVERYTHING would run on 220! your bill is measured in kilowatt-hours

the charge for electricity is determined by how much power you use. power is wattage. volts x amps = watts. so if you have a 110 volt appliance that pulls 10 amps that's 1100 watts. that same appliance wired for 220 volts will pull 5 amps, also 1100 watts. the advantage to the higher voltage is that your less likely to overload the circuit and the appliance will run cooler and it's likely to last longer.

Im using Blackstar LEDs, 240W HO for veg and a 500w for flower. I am aware that HPS leaves a bigger light footprint and is better for larger grows, but if you have the money to invest in LEDs, they last longer, draw less power, and produce denser and higher overall quality buds from my research on independent testers grow journals and results.

I want to do a side by side HPS vs LED which I will be doing after the upcoming LED vs LED comparative grow.

couldn't begin to tell you, but it seems to be the case from grows I have seen, so I am planning on doing an HPS vs LED after the battle of the leds grow.. then I will be able to personally verify or disprove it.

Really no contest, but I think in the next few years LED tech will be a lot better. I've heard there are some decent ones, but personally I would only use them for veg or cloning.

If you search around, there's been a lot of those. Just a heads up so you don't waste your time.

changing over to 220 doesn't change your electric consumption. Electric companies charge by the Kilowatt. 220 is half the amps but twice the voltage so it still the same amount of watts.

ive seen dozens of these threads before and the led users come out in droves. the fact that they charge a huge amount for these led's and give exagerated facts on the box is enough to tell you its not where it needs to be in the chain of best to worse lights. sorry u payed so much i have seen some impressive led grows but none to make me want to spend that kind of money for the results they provide. im hid all the way, not because its what everybody says is better, but because if you search online any impressive led grow you find will still pale in comparison to an hid. why would i shell out huge amounts of money for a veg light when a t5 or cfl's will get the same results way cheaper. You mention LED users pay more, but how expensive is an HID set up?
Im honestly not familiar but does it need a ballast? reflector? how much are bulbs and how long do they last?

I paid $550 for a complete LED setup that will go clone through flower and last 15,000 hours or so. Im curious how price equates when its all said and done.

If you notice though, in my current grow, i am confined to a closet with zero ventelation besides fans inside, so an HID wouldnt work with the heat they produce for my available setup.

I paid 250 for my 1000w hps setup. Bulb, sealed air cooled hood and ballast. I change my bulbs about once a year. about 40 for a bulb. I've had one of my ballasts for over 5 years now, It still works fine!
